The Western Australia Mallee shrub ecoregion lies to the west, the Little Sandy Desert to the northwest, the Gibson Desert and the Central Ranges xeric shrublands to the north, the Tirari and Sturt Stony deserts to the east, while the Nullarbor Plain to the south separates it from the Southern Ocean.

The Little Desert National Park is in Victoria, Australia, 375 kilometres west of Melbourne.

The Little Desert receives an annual rainfall of about 480 millimetres ( 19 inches ), though there is a gradient from 400 millimetres ( 16 inches ) in the east to 600 millimetres ( 23. 5 inches ) near Naracoorte.

Over time, the Little Desert became a national park, beginning in 1968 with the eastern third.

The Little Desert has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area ( IBA ) because it supports populations of Malleefowl and Diamond Firetails.

After it was determined that ticks could not survive a desert crossing, the government endorsed James Isdell's scheme and funded a survey to find a stock route that would cross the Great Sandy Desert, the Little Sandy Desert and the Gibson Desert.

It is also found in the Grampians and the Little Desert in Victoria and is widespread in Tasmania.

Forty million years ago the Southern Ocean reached the base of the northern and western base of the mountain range, the deposition from the range forming the sea floor which is now Little Desert National Park.

Beginning in early 1967, a new area of the prison was opened for incoming American POWs ; it was dubbed " Little Vegas ", and its individual buildings and areas were named after Las Vegas Strip landmarks, such as " Golden Nugget ," " Thunderbird ," " Stardust ," " Riviera ," and the " Desert Inn.
