The Kakadu Savanna IBA also supports Varied Lorikeets, Northern Rosellas, Silver-crowned Friarbirds, White-gaped, Yellow-tinted, White-lined, Bar-breasted and Banded Honeyeaters, Sandstone Shrike-thrushes, White-browed Robins, Canary White-eyes, and Masked and Long-tailed Finches.

The seaducks commonly found in coastal areas, such as the Long-tailed Duck ( formerly known in the US as Oldsquaw ), scoters, goldeneyes, mergansers, bufflehead and eiders, are also sometimes colloquially referred to in North America as diving ducks because they also feed by diving ; their subfamily ( Merginae ) is a very distinct one however.

Rivaling the prior species in bulk if not dimensions, the mynas of the genus Mino are also large, especially the Yellow-faced ( M. dumontii ) and Long-tailed Mynas ( M. kreffti ).

The Reed Cormorant ( Microcarbo africanus ), also known as the Long-tailed Cormorant, is a bird in the cormorant family Phalacrocoracidae.

There also specimens of several extinct species housed in the museum, including the Liverpool Pigeon, the Great Auk ( and an egg ), the Falkland Islands Wolf, the South Island Piopio, the Lord Howe Swamphen, the Dodo, the Long-tailed Hopping Mouse, and the Thylacine.

The Long-tailed Hawk ( Urotriorchis macrourus ) is a bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, eagles and harriers.

The Long-tailed Hawk primarily eats squirrels and small birds ; it can also hunt chickens in the villages close to the forest.

It is the only living member of its genus, Clangula ; this was formerly used for the goldeneyes, with the Long-tailed Duck being placed in Harelda.

The Bufflehead was formerly separated in its own genus Charitonetta, while the goldeneyes proper were mistakenly placed in Clangula ( as Clangula americana ), the genus of the Long-tailed Duck which at that time was placed in Harelda.

Trichys, the last genus, contains one species, the Long-tailed Porcupine ( Trichys fasciculata ) of Borneo.

In 1931, American ornithologist James Lee Peters was the first to consider this in a separate genus along with the Pygmy Cormorant ( M. pygmaeus ), Little Cormorant ( M. niger ), and the Long-tailed Cormorant ( M. africanus ).

The Long-tailed Shrike or Rufous-backed Shrike ( Lanius schach ) is a member of the bird family Laniidae, the shrikes.

The Long-tailed Shrike is a typical shrike, favouring dry open habitats and found perched prominently atop a bush or on a wire.

* The Long-tailed Hopping Mouse ( Notomys longicaudatus ) is an extinct species, which was widespread in the drier regions of southern and central Australia.

The Pomarine and Great Skuas ' mitochondrial DNA ( inherited from the mother ) is in fact more closely related to each other than it is to either Arctic or Long-tailed Skuas, or to the Southern Hemisphere species.

The species in this family are generally not migratory, although the Long-tailed Tit is prone to dispersing in the northern edges of its range ( particularly in Siberia ).

Their plumage is typically dull grey or brown, although some species have white markings and the Long-tailed Tit has some pinkish colour.

At least in the two well-studied species ( the Long-tailed Tit and the American Bushtit ), it is likely that only the female incubates.

In the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy, the Paridae family is much enlarged to include related groups such as the Penduline tits and Long-tailed tits, but while the former are quite close to the titmice indeed and could conceivably be included in that family together with the stenostirid " warblers ", the long-tailed tits are not.

Those that survived into historical times ranged from the wolf-sized Thylacine to the tiny Long-tailed Planigale which at 4 to 6 grams is less than half the size of a mouse.

The Long-tailed Duck or Oldsquaw ( Clangula hyemalis ) is a medium-sized sea duck.

The Long-tailed Duck is gregarious, forming large flocks in winter and during migration.

The Long-tailed Duck is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds ( AEWA ) applies.

The Long-tailed Jaeger ( Stercorarius longicaudus ) ( known as the Long-tailed Skua outside the Americas ) is a seabird in the skua family Stercorariidae.

It is frequently known as the Bearded Tit, due to some similarities to the Long-tailed Tit, or the Bearded Parrotbill.

The Long-tailed Tit or Long-tailed Bushtit ( Aegithalos caudatus ) is a common bird found throughout Europe and Asia.

The Long-tailed Tit is globally widespread throughout temperate northern Europe and Asia, into boreal Scandinavia and south into the Mediterranean zone It inhabits deciduous and mixed woodland with a well-developed shrub layer, favouring edge habitats.

The Long-tailed Tit is insectivorous throughout the year.

The nest of the Long-tailed Tit is constructed from four materials-lichen, feathers, spider egg cocoons and moss, over 6000 pieces in all for a typical nest.

Identification is complicated by similarities to Long-tailed Jaeger and Pomarine Skua, and the existence of three colour morphs.

On display are Long-tailed Paradise Whydah, Purple Grenadier, and other birds.

The American Ornithologists ' Union stated that " political correctness " was not sufficient to change the name, but " to conform with English usage in other parts of the world ", it officially adopted the name Long-tailed Duck.

Since then, molecular work by Sibley and Ahlquist showed the Little Pied and Long-tailed Cormorants formed a group which had diverged early on from other cormorants.

Distinguishing this skua from the other North Atlantic skuas ( Arctic Skua, Pomarine Skua and Long-tailed Skua ) is relatively straightforward.

Many other species and subspecies have been removed over the years: Cetti's Warbler ( in 1976 ); Long-tailed Skua ( in 1979 ); Common Crane and Ring-billed Gull ( in 1987 ); Surf Scoter, Little Egret, European Bee-eater, Pallas's Warbler and Woodchat Shrike ( in 1990 ); Green-winged Teal ( in 1992 ); Ring-necked Duck, Short-toed Lark and Little Bunting ( in 1993 ); White-tailed Eagle and Kumlien's Gull ( in 1998 ); American Wigeon, Black-crowned Night Heron and Rose-coloured Starling ( in 2001 ); and Black Brant ( in 2005 ).

Many of the lakes hold breeding wildfowl, with species like Long-tailed Duck being found.

The majority of icterid species live in the tropics, although there are a number of temperate forms, such as American blackbirds and the Long-tailed Meadowlark.

The Long-tailed Tit has the most widespread distribution of any species of Aegithalidae, occurring across Eurasia from Britain to Japan.

Two species have been identified comparatively recently in South Africa, the Long-tailed Pipit in 1996 and the Kimberley Pipit in 2002.

On migration, Long-tailed Jaegers are more likely to catch their own food, and less likely to steal from gulls and terns than larger species.

There are several protected species of mammals on the island, including the Binturong, Long-tailed Macaque, Slow Loris, Black Giant Squirrel, Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Mouse deer, Brush-tailed Porcupine, and Common Palm Civet, from a total of 45 species of mammals and 138 species of birds, including the majestic Frigatebird.

There are over 100 different birds on the islands, of which 11 to 16 bird species entirely restricted in their range to this small island group, including: Black-winged Lory ( Eos cyanogenia ); the small tree-climbing Geelvink Pygmy Parrot ( Micropsitta geelvinkiana ); Biak Scrubfowl ( Megapodius geelvinkianus ); Spice Imperial-pigeon ( Ducula myristicivora ); Yellow-bibbed Fruit-dove ( Ptilinopus solomonensis ); Biak Coucal ( Centropus chalybeus ); two tree kingfishers, Biak Paradise Kingfisher ( Tanysiptera riedelii ) and Numfor Paradise Kingfisher ( Tanysiptera carolinae ); Biak Gerygone ( Gerygone hypoxantha ) ( a subspecies of the Large-billed Gerygone ; Biak Monarch ( Monarcha brehmii ); Biak Flycatcher ( Myiagra atra ); Long-tailed Starling ( Aplonis magna ); and Biak White-eye ( Zosterops mysorensis ).

Other common species include the Barrow's Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser, Wigeon, Gadwall, Mallard, Common Scoter, Long-tailed duck and Eurasian Teal.

The tail of this species had 42-43 vertebrae, a number surpassed among mammals solely by the Long-tailed Pangolin.

The Long-tailed Broadbill ( Psarisomus dalhousiae ) is a species of broadbill that is found in the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, and Indonesia.

The majority of the island is designated as the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve — home to many unique and endemic species of plants and animals including the Nicobar scrubfowl ( Megapodius nicobariensis, a megapode bird ), the Edible-nest Swiftlet ( Aerodramus fuciphagus ), the Nicobar Long-tailed Macaque ( Macaca fascicularis umbrosa ), saltwater crocodile ( Crocodylus porosus ), Giant Leatherback Sea Turtle ( Dermochelys coriacea ), Malayan box turtle, Nicobar tree shrew, reticulated python ( Python reticulatus ) and the giant robber crab ( or coconut crab, Birgus latro ).
