The M16 rifle design, including variant or modified version of it such as the Armalite / Colt AR-15 series, AAI M15 rifle ; AP74 ; EAC J-15 ; SGW XM15A ; any 22-caliber rimfire variant, including the Mitchell M16A-1 / 22, Mitchell M16 / 22, Mitchell CAR-15 / 22, and AP74 Auto Rifle, is a prohibited and restricted weapon in Canada.

Later in the 1980s, the Advanced Combat Rifle program was run to find a replacement for the M16.

The Advanced Combat Rifle program in the 1980s produced weapons that were superior in some ways, but none improved upon the M16 series enough to replace it.

A partial replacement for the M16 rifle is the SOF Combat Assault Rifle ( SCAR ), designated Mk 16.

The period saw a generational change in weapons and equipment on issue to ADGs ; jungle green uniforms were replaced by the Disruptive Pattern Combat Uniform ( DPCU ), the L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle ( SLR ), M16 and F1 Sub-Machine Gun were replaced by the F88 Austeyr assault rifle and Vietnam-era radios were replaced with the Raven series of VHF and HF sets.

The Corps also utilizes an adaptation of the M16 assault rifle, the Squad Advanced Marksman Rifle ( SAM-R ).

The U. S. Army 3rd Infantry Division saw limited use of a modified M16 which was accurized in a manner similar to the SAM-R, unofficially designated the AMU Squad Designated Marksman Rifle ( SDM-R ) This rifle was designed for engagements up to 1000m.

Many armed forces employ selective fire assault rifles such as the M16 Rifle and other small arms with a burst mode instead of, or in addition to, a fully automatic mode, to encourage soldiers to use effective fire techniques.

The SPR program appears to have grown out of both the SOPMOD Block II program, and the U. S. Navy SEALs Recon Rifle ( a 16 " flat-topped M16 carbine ).

Noted as the designer of the AR-15, later adopted as the M16 Rifle.

This has marked the return of battle rifles such as the U. S. Marine Corps Designated Marksman Rifle and the M14, which had been phased out previously due to their limited effectiveness in the hands of beginner marksmen compared to lighter rifles and carbines like the M16, CAR-15, and M4.

Weapons previously utilized by Security Forces / Police include the M16 Rifle, M29 81mm mortar, M67 recoilless rifle, M72 LAW, M1 Carbine or M2 Carbine ( 1947 – 1972 ), M-60 ( 1965 – 1998 ), S & W Model 15. 38 caliber pistol ( 1960 – 1990 ), XM148 ( 1966 – 1991 ), and M79 grenade launcher.

Originally made for use with the M16 Rifle, the XM148 was also used by US Special Forces in conjunction with the XM177E2 and the Australian SASR in conjunction with the modified L1A1, nicknamed " the bitch ".

By the 1990s, the US had adopted the M4 carbine, a derivative of the M16 family which fired the same 5. 56mm cartridge but was lighter and shorter ( in overall length and barrel length ), resulting in marginally reduced range and power.

The M16 fires the 5. 56 × 45mm NATO cartridge.

The M16 is a lightweight, 5. 56 mm, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed assault rifle, with a rotating bolt, actuated by direct impingement gas operation.

Examples of firearms in this range are the American 5. 56 mm M16 and the Russian 5. 45 × 39mm AK-74.

The SIMON launches using a bullet trap to capture a standard 5. 56 bullet fired from an M4 carbine or M16.

To remedy the range problem, Colt incorporated a 14. 5 inch barrel, giving the weapon greater reach than the XM177 while still being more compact than the M16.

The price is slightly inferior ballistic performance compared to the full-size M16, with its 5. 5 " ( 14 cm ) longer barrel.

The 1960s were boom years for Colt with the escalation of the Vietnam War, Robert McNamara shutting down the Springfield Armory, and the U. S. Army's subsequent adoption of the M16, for which Colt held the production rights and would sell over 5 million units worldwide.

) The La France M16K, was basically a standard military M16 rifle, chambered for the standard issue 5. 56 mm cartridge with an 8 3 / 8 inch ( 213 mm ) barrel.

Like the M4 and M16, the XM8 was chambered for the standard 5. 56 mm NATO round and was normally equipped with a 30-round plastic box magazine.

While the 7. 62mm Armalite AR-10 proved fairly resistant to malfunctions caused by deposit fouling, the smaller 5. 56mm M16 rifle experienced significantly increased malfunctions due to fouling and carbon deposits after a change in propellant specifications.

The SPR, used by Special Operations Forces of both the U. S. Army and U. S. Navy, is a heavily modified light designated marksman variation of the AR-15 / M16 line of infantry weapons, and is chambered for NATO standard 5. 56x45mm ammunition.

In contrast, assault rifles fire smaller intermediate-size cartridges such as the 5. 56x45mm NATO round used in the M16, Chinese 5. 8x42mm used in the QBZ-95 or the Russian moderate-velocity 7. 62x39mm and 5. 45x39mm cartridges of the AK-47 and AK-74 series of rifles.

Much like the U. S. Marine Corps SAM-R, the 3rd Infantry division SDM-R was an accurized M16 rifle ( 5. 56x45mm NATO caliber ) built in-house by the U. S. Army Advanced Marksmanship Unit, and was informally known as " the AMU rifle ".

Chambered for the 5. 56x45mm intermediate cartridge, the M16 displaced the M14 which had been adopted little more than a decade earlier.

Other forces followed with designs of their own, notably the American M16 created by mounting quadruple M2 machine guns on a M3 Half-track.

In U. S. service, the M16 assault rifle replaced the M14 as the standard infantry weapon, although the M14 continued to be used by designated marksmen.

In the current M16A2 and M16A4 variants of the U. S .- made M16, continuous fully automatic fire is not possible, having been replaced by an automatic burst of three cartridges ( this conserves ammunition and increases controllability ).

The civilian version of the M16 continues to be known as the AR-15 and looks exactly like the military version, although to conform to B. A. T. F. E.

Variants of both of the M16 and AK-47 are still in wide international use today, though other automatic rifle designs have since been introduced.

HK was contracted by the U. S. Army to produce the kinetic energy subsystem ( see: kinetic projectiles or kinetic energy penetrator ) of the Objective Individual Combat Weapon, a planned replacement for the M16 / M203 grenade launcher combination.

HK replaced the direct impingement system used by the Stoner design on the original M16 platform with a short-stroke piston operating system.

Some weapons, such as the AR-15 / M16, do not have a piston, instead using a system of direct impingement in which the gases operate the bolt carrier by acting directly on it.
