By the 1990s, the US had adopted the M4 carbine, a derivative of the M16 family which fired the same 5. 56mm cartridge but was lighter and shorter ( in overall length and barrel length ), resulting in marginally reduced range and power.

Common historical examples include the Winchester Model 1892, Lee-Enfield " Jungle Carbine ", Mauser K98 Kurz, SKS, M1 carbine ( no relation to the larger M1 Garand ) and M4 carbine ( a more compact variant of the current M16 rifle ).

Conversely, rifle bullets can pierce light armor and are easier to shoot accurately, but even a carbine such as the Colt M4 is larger and / or longer than a submachine gun, making it harder to maneuver in close quarters.

A smaller version of the M16A2, the M4 carbine, is widely used by U. S. and NATO tank and vehicle crews, airbornes, support staff, and in other scenarios where space is limited.

In 2010, the M16 began to be phased out in the U. S. Army and is being replaced by the M4 carbine, which is itself a shortened derivative of the M16A2.

In the U. S. Army the M16A2 rifle is being supplemented with two rifle models, the M16A4 and the M4 carbine as the standard issue assault rifle.

The M16A4 has a flat-top receiver developed for the M4 carbine, a handguard with four Picatinny rails for mounting a sight, laser, night vision device, forward handgrip, removable handle, or a flashlight.

The M16A2 is currently being supplemented by the M16A4, which incorporates the flattop receiver unit developed for the M4 carbine, and Picatinny rail system.

In the 1990s the M4 carbine took over the operational role of the M3 submachine gun, some M9s, and many M16A2s.

The reason to build a new M4 is to produce a new more reliable carbine for US troops in a few years.

Law enforcement agencies use machine pistols for hostage rescues and for breaching gang compounds because the weapons offer a very high rate of fire in a small weapon, which can be maneuvered inside houses and stairwells, places where an assault carbine such as the Colt M4 would be unwieldy.

The M26 Modular Accessory Shotgun System ( MASS ) is the most advanced and recent example of a bolt-action shotgun, albeit one designed to be attached to an M16 rifle or M4 carbine using an underbarrel mount ( although with the standalone kit, the MASS can become a standalone weapon ).
