MTV, originally an initialism of Music Television, is an American cable television channel based in New York City that launched on August 1, 1981.

The original purpose of MTV was to be " Music Television ", playing music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, guided by on-air personalities known as VJs, or video jockeys.

By the early 1980s, the promotion of pop music had been greatly affected by the rise of Music Television channels like MTV, which " favoured those artists such as Michael Jackson and Madonna who had a strong visual appeal ".

At the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards in New York, Fatboy Slim won 6 awards for " Weapon of Choice ", the most awards at the ceremony.

Cruel Intentions ( 1999 ), a modern-day retelling of Les Liaisons dangereuses featured a kiss between Gellar and co-star Selma Blair that won the two the " Best Kiss " award at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards.

The Rock won a number of minor awards, including ' Best On-Screen Duo ' for Connery and Cage at the MTV Movie Awards.

In 2005, the film received the Silver Bucket of Excellence Award in honor of its 20th anniversary at the MTV Movie Awards.

Its inclusion helped the song reach number two on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks in 1992 ( it remained in the Hot 100 for over 40 weeks ), and won the band an MTV Award at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.
