In 1987, Crowded House won the American MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist for their song " Don't Dream It's Over ", which was also nominated for three other awards.

In Britney: For the Record, Britney's father Jamie Spears was making her cheese grits on the morning of the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

Their best known track is " Virtual Insanity ", which won four awards at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.

At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, the creative music video for " Virtual Insanity " won four awards ; Best Video, Best Special Effects, Best Cinematography, and Breakthrough Video, and the band performed the song at the ceremony.

Robyn appeared and performed " Dancing on My Own " with deadmau5 at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on 12 September 2010.

The music video for " Risky ", written and directed by Meiert Avis, also won the first ever MTV " Breakthrough Video Award ".

The resulting clip was a huge success, and " Koufey " and his troupe were invited to New York City to perform the song for the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards.

By the early 1980s, the promotion of pop music had been greatly affected by the rise of Music Television channels like MTV, which " favoured those artists such as Michael Jackson and Madonna who had a strong visual appeal ".
