The White Mountain National Forest links the Vermont and Maine portions of the Appalachian Trail, and boasts the Mount Washington Auto Road, where visitors may drive to the top of Mount Washington.

The Maine Central Railroad leased the Bangor-Vanceboro E & NA in 1882 and purchased it in 1955.

Vanceboro was selected as the border crossing for the European and North American Railway ( E & NA ) between Bangor, Maine, and Saint John, New Brunswick, during surveys in the 1860s.
