Despite being dominated by modern apartments and office towers Southbank has a number of significant heritage buildings existing in the Arts precinct, on the eastern end and along St Kilda Road, which includes the Victorian Arts Centre and National Gallery of Victoria ( 1960s ), parts of the Victorian College of the Arts campus as well as the Victoria Barracks and Malthouse Theatre.

Notable examples include The Malthouse, a landmark conversion of silos into apartments by award winning architect Nonda Katsalidis.

Some such sites include, Nonda Katsalidis ’ Malthouse apartments in Richmond, a conversion of a former grain silo and the South Australian site of the Balhannah Mines which was adapted into a private residence and has received awards from the Housing Industry Association and the Design Institute of Australia.

* A Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne and Victorian Opera ( Melbourne ) co-production of The Threepenny Opera was presented in Melbourne between 28 May and 17 June 2010 and again in Sydney by the Sydney Theatre Company in September 2011.

In 2008, Müller's Anatomie Titus was translated into English by Julian Hammond and performed at the Cremorne Theatre in Brisbane, the Canberra Theatre, the Playhouse in the Sydney Opera House and the Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne by the Bell Shakespeare Company and the Queensland Theatre Company.

In 2005, " The Black Swan of Trespass ", a surrealist play about the real life of a self-admittedly fictional Ern Malley by Lally Katz and Chris Kohn, premiered at the Melbourne Malthouse Theatre.

Directed by Marion Potts, with music by Andree Greenwell, the work was first performed in the Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne in 2008 and again in Sydney Theatre Company's Wharf 2 in February 2009.

On 21 February 2010, actress Cate Blanchett read excerpts from Porter's posthumously published short work on literary criticism and emotions in literature, On Passion, at the Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne.

Since then, her performed plays have included Criminology ( 2007 ) with Tom Wright in the Merlyn Theatre at the Malthouse, Apocalypse Bear Trilogy ( 2009 ) at the Melbourne Theatre Company Lawler Studio as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival, and The Mysteries Project: Genesis ( 2009 ) with Hilary Bell at the Sydney Theatre Company Wharf 2.

He has appeared at venues around the world including Andrew's Lane Theatre ( Dublin ), Jermyn Street Theatre ( London ), Chapel Off Chapel ( Melbourne ), Kabarett Junction ( Sydney ), The Adelaide Festival Centre ( Adelaide ), CUB Malthouse ( Melbourne ), Seymour Theatre Centre ( Sydney ), Capers Cabaret ( Melbourne ); His Majesty's Theatre ( Perth ), The Judith Wright Centre ( Brisbane ), The Butterfly Club ( Melbourne ), Fowler's Live ( Adelaide ) and The Powerhouse ( Brisbane ).

Martin then held a nine-day professional workshop of the play in Melbourne, Australia, at the Malthouse Theatre ( in conjunction with Belvoir St Theatre ), which ended with two public staged readings of the play.

Malthouse Broad is a broad ( i. e., lake ) at Ranworth in the Norfolk Broads.
