Disgruntled colonists in the area, feeling that their opinions and wishes had been ignored by both sides, formed a resistance movement known as the Maquis.

While there, the Maquis ship and Voyager were transported against their will into the Delta Quadrant, 70, 000 light-years away, by a massive displacement wave.

According to the fictional storyline of the Star Trek universe, the Maquis were formed in the 24th Century after a peace treaty was enacted between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union, redesignating the demilitarized zone between the two powers, which resulted in the Federation ceding several of their colony worlds to the Cardassians.

Nonetheless, various Federation members supported the Maquis ' cause, and illegally helped to supply them with weapons and other technology that they could use in their struggle.

In following years, when the Cardassian Union joined forces with The Dominion to fight in the Dominion War against the Federation, the Dominion aided the Cardassian military in obliterating the Maquis, a prelude to their war against the Federation and its allies.

The only member of the crew with whom Paris initially had a somewhat difficult relationship was Chakotay because of their history in the Maquis.

Voyager eventually finds the Maquis ship, and the two crews reluctantly agree they must join forces in order to survive their long journey home.

Résistance cells were small groups of armed men and women ( called the Maquis in rural areas ), who, in addition to their guerrilla warfare activities, were also publishers of underground newspapers, providers of first-hand intelligence information, and maintainers of escape networks that helped Allied soldiers and airmen trapped behind enemy lines.

In " Blaze of Glory ", the characters confront the issue of ethnic cleansing when the Maquis – a resistance group of former Federation citizens now living in Cardassian space – are hunted down and ask for the assistance of Sisko, who used to criticize their methods.

Maquis introduced many new dances over the years, including one, zembwela, ( from their 1985 hit " Karubandika ", which was so popular that the term has become synonymous with dancing.

Captain Janeway offers to work with the Maquis leader Chakotay to unite their crews to find their missing persons and return to the Alpha Quadrant.

Other likeminded groups can have these icons as well ; the Maquis incorporate members of four different affiliations into their arsenal, while the Terok Nor personnel and ships represent the brief period of Cardassian / Dominion command of Deep Space 9.

Inspired in part by revolutionary Che Guevara, they have been compared to the French Maquis, Viet Cong, and the guerrillas of Josip Broz Tito in their tactics and effectiveness.

While the objective for Combat was to develop, oversee and organise these armed groups, there were some divisions relating to this at the heart of the MUR ; some, like Charles Delestraint, saw the Maquis as actual pockets of resistance within French territory, whereas others like Frenay saw them as armed bands operating by ambush and disappearing once their mission was accomplished.

Torres became associated with a Maquis captain named Chakotay, and was serving as chief engineer on his ship, the Val Jean, when they were brought to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker.

During her time with the Maquis, Torres reprogrammed a Cardassian missile known as " Dreadnought.

" The missile, built with artificial intelligence, was originally targeted at Maquis installations.

In 2371, B ' Elanna Torres joined the Voyager crew with the rest of the Maquis from the Val Jean, as Captain Kathryn Janeway offers them the opportunity.

Some of these colonists subsequently formed the Maquis to protect themselves from Cardassian aggression, although they received no official support from the Federation, who feared breaking the peace treaty with the Cardassians, which would lead to war.

In one case the Federation ship tracked a Maquis vessel to the Badlands with the intention of apprehending it but an alien being sent both to the Delta Quadrant in the opposite side of the Milky Way Galaxy, where the two crews were forced to unite to survive against alien threats like the Kazon.

There, Chakotay, a former Starfleet officer now serving with the Maquis, discovered Paris and recruited him to serve as a mercenary pilot for the Maquis Rebellion against the Federation.

Janeway, charged with finding and capturing the Maquis ship commanded by Chakotay, offered Paris early parole in exchange for serving as her informant on Chakotay and the Maquis.

He had a rough start, however, as Starfleet and Maquis alike viewed Paris with suspicion.

On the Vercors plateau, a Maquis group fought about 8, 000 soldiers under General Karl Pflaum and was defeated with 600 casualties.

The Maquis heavily relied on airdrops of weapons and explosives from the British SOE, SOE parachuted agents in with wireless sets ( for radio communication ) and dropping containers with various munitions including, but not limited to Sten guns, Pencil detonators, plastic explosives, Welrod pistols ( a silenced specialized assassination weapon favored by covert operatives ) and assorted small arms ( pistols, rifles and sub-machine guns ).

Stranded, and with the Maquis ship also destroyed, both crews must integrate and work together for the anticipated 75-year journey home.

The Free French established a base at Saint-Marcel and began to arm and equip of local resistance fighters, operating with up to 3, 000 Maquis.

In her final episode, entitled " Preemptive Strike ", the newly-promoted Lieutenant Ro is asked by Starfleet to infiltrate the rebel Maquis, who are undermining the Federation treaty with Cardassia.

During the mission she finds her loyalties in conflict with her duties as she becomes increasingly sympathetic to the plight of the Maquis.

According to Avatar, after the Dominion's destruction of the Maquis, Ro continued to fight in resistance cells until the Dominion's retreat to Cardassia, and had no contact with Picard.

When Bajor finally joins the Federation, Ro intends to leave her post to escape punishment for crimes she committed with the Maquis, but is convinced by Picard to accept a pardon and rejoin Starfleet.

Historians still debate how effective the French Résistance was militarily, but for instance the neutralization of the Maquis du Vercors alone involved the commitment of over 10, 000 German troops within the theater, with several more thousands held in reserve, in a period when the Allied invasion was breaking out of Normandy and French Operation Jedburgh commandos were being dropped nearby to the south to prepare for the Allied landing in Provence.

When the Maquis ship was destroyed by crashing into a Kazon ship to save the USS Voyager, Tuvok was transported off the ship with a handful of other survivors, and resumed his duties as Security & Tactical Officer.

Otherwise, nearly all the other Maquis who had not died were in Federation prisons.

As Jeri Taylor commented, " we knew that we wanted to include a renegade element in Voyager, and that the show would involve a ship housing both Starfleet people and those idealistic freedom fighters that the Federation felt were outlaws the Maquis.

In several cases the Federation actually intervened in the war between the Maquis and the Cardassians, aiding the latter in recognition of the peace treaty.

Tried and convicted of treason for aiding the Maquis Rebellion, Paris was sentenced to serve time in the Federation Penal Settlement near Auckland, New Zealand.

The Maquis ship was destroyed, and its crew joined the Federation crew on Voyager.

Tom Paris, whom Janeway released from a Federation prison to help her find the Maquis ship, is made Voyager < nowiki >'</ nowiki > s helm officer.

However, some Federation colonists were opposed to the agreement and formed the Maquis, a rebel movement who resisted the Cardassians ( see below ).

It introduced the Federation faction of the Maquis and expanded the core play of the game.
