The Mars Society is an international space advocacy non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the human exploration and settlement of the planet Mars.

The Society was formally established in August 1998, when over 700 delegates – astronomers, scientists, engineers, astronauts, entrepreneurs, educators, students, and space enthusiasts – attended a weekend of talks and presentations from leading Mars exploration advocates.

Members of the Society are from all walks of life, and all actively work to promote the ideals of space exploration and the opportunities for exploring Mars.

* the Mars Society Analogue Pressurized Rover – a competition to design a pressurized rover vehicle that could be used on Mars that was won by the Michigan Mars Rover Team.

* the Mars Gravity Biosatellite-a program to design, build, and launch a satellite rotated to artificially provide partial gravity of 0. 38g, equivalent to that of Mars, and hosting a small population of mice, to study the health effects of partial gravity, as opposed to zero gravity ; this originated as a Mars Society initiative and is now supported by the YourNameIntoSpace web portal

* the Mars balloon mission ARCHIMEDES, due to launch in 2018 ( conducted by the German Chapter of Mars Society )

The current board of directors of the Mars Society includes Robert Zubrin ( chairman ), James Heiser, and Declan O ' Donnell.

The ASF ( Österreichisches Weltraum Forum, OeWF ) is a national network for aerospace and space enthusiasts, being the Austrian chapter of the Mars Society.

Just as work began at the Champ de Mars, the " Committee of Three Hundred " ( one member for each metre of the tower's height ) was formed, led by Charles Garnier and including some of the most important figures of the French arts establishment, including Adolphe Bouguereau, Guy de Maupassant, Charles Gounod and Jules Massenet: a petition was sent to Charles Alphand, the Minister of Works, and was published by Le Temps.

* 1791 – Members of the French National Guard under the command of General Lafayette open fire on a crowd of radical Jacobins at the Champ de Mars, Paris, during the French Revolution, killing as many as 50 people.

* July 17 – The Champ de Mars Massacre occurs during the French Revolution.

It was one of the largest demonstrations in Belgium's history and was called the " White March " ( French: " Marche Blanche ", Dutch: " Witte Mars ").

In most languages with Latin origins ( French, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Romanian, Gallician, Sardinian, Corsican, but not Portuguese ), the day is named after Mars, the Roman god of war.

A French psychologist pivotally involved in early psychological screening of First Hundred candidates in Antarctica, Duval is assigned to accompany the Mars mission and is treated as an observer rather than as a member of the team during the early events of Red Mars.

During the French Revolution, Lafayette attempted to maintain order — to the point of ordering the Garde nationale to fire on demonstrators at the Champ de Mars in July 1791 — an action for which he ultimately was persecuted by the Jacobins.

This controversial finding was first reported by the French psychologist and statistician Michel Gauquelin who, in his book L ' influence des astres (" The Influence of the Stars ", 1955 ), the first rigorous study of astrological claims, suggested that a statistically significant number of sports champions were born just after the planet Mars rises or culminates.

In 1996 the report, with a commentary by J. W. Nienhuys and several letters from Gauquelin to the Committee, was published in book form as The Mars Effect – A French Test of Over 1, 000 Sports Champions.

These ideas became known to his Spanish rulers, and to assuage them he wrote a philippic called the Mars gallicus ( 1635 ), a violent attack on French ambitions generally, and on Cardinal Richelieu's indifference to international Catholic interests in particular.
