When closed the altarpiece displayed the four panels of the legend of St. Sebastian ’ s Martyrdom, while the opened wings displayed the Stations of the Cross.

All of Origen's works written after 218 are dedicated to Ambrose, including his On Martyrdom, Contra Celsum, Commentary on St. John's Gospel, and On Prayer.

When Rubinstein starred in D ' Annunzio's play The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, Brooks painted her as Saint Sebastian — tied to a post, being shot with an arrow by a masked dwarf standing on a table.

He painted of the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian in the monastery of San Sebastiano.

Bonnat's vivid portrait-painting of contemporary celebrities is his most characteristic work, but his most important works are arguably his powerful religious paintings, such as his Christ on the Cross ( now in the collection of the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris, but not currently on display ), Job ( in the Musée Bonnat ), St Vincent Taking the Place of Two Galley Slaves ( at the church of Saint-Nicholas des Champs in Paris ), and the large Martyrdom of St Denis for the Pantheon in Paris.

Cecco Boneri, if this is his name, appears in many of Caravaggio's paintings, as the juvenile angel supporting Christ in The Conversion of Saint Paul, ( 1600 – 1601 ) possibly as the angel offering a martyr's palm to the saint in The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew ( 1599 – 1600 ) ( although seen only as the top of a curly head of hair ), as the young Isaac about to have his throat cut in The Sacrifice of Isaac ( 1603 ), as an adolescent David in David with the Head of Goliath ( 1605-1606-the head is Caravaggio's ), and as the John the Baptist now in the Capitoline gallery in Rome.

He owned cassone panels formerly in the collections of Otto H. Kahn and Lord Crawford, as well as Fungai's predella panel of the Martyrdom of Saint Clement, now reunited with an erstwhile companion in the City Art Gallery, York.

Between 1507 and 1511 Dürer worked on some of his most celebrated paintings: Adam and Eve ( 1507 ), The Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand ( 1508, for Frederick of Saxony ), Virgin with the Iris ( 1508 ), the altarpiece Assumption of the Virgin ( 1509, for Jacob Heller of Frankfurt ), and Adoration of the Trinity ( 1511, for Matthaeus Landauer ).

The thin-skinned artist was outraged, however, by the criticism of his ambitious canvas of the Martyrdom of Saint Symphorien ( cathedral of Autun ), shown in the Salon of 1834.

In 1569 the graduate Sancho Busto de Villegas, a member of the Supreme Council of the Inquisition and governor of the Archbishopric of Toledo ( afterwards Bishop of Avila ) wrote, based on the trial documents, which were stored in the Valladolid court archives, Relación autorizada del martirio del Santo Inocente ( Authorized Account of the Martyrdom of Saint Innocent ), which was deposited in the municipal archives of La Guardia town hall.

In 1720 appeared another hagiography in Madrid, La Historia del Inocente Trinity el Santo Niño de la Guardia ( The History of the Trinitarian Innocent, the Holy Child of La Guardia ), the work of Diego Martinez Abad, and in 1785, the village priest of La Guardia, Martín Martínez Moreno, published his Historia del martirio del Santo Niño de la Guardia ( History of the Martyrdom of the Holy Child of La Guardia ).

Its origins are entwined with the religious and beneficent brotherhoods ( irmandades ) organized by the Roman Catholic Church among ethnic Yoruba slaves, the Order of Our Lady of the Good Death ( Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte ), for women, and the Order of Our Lord of the Martyrdom ( Nosso Senhor dos Martírios ), for men.

The writings of the Apostolic Fathers are in a number of genres, some, e. g. the writings of Clement of Rome are letters ( called epistles ), others relate historical events, e. g. the Martyrdom of Polycarp, and one ( the Didache ) is a guide for ethical and liturgical practice.

He also wrote the fragmentary Martirio de San Lorenzo ( the Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, a Roman martyr of the third century ), which may be connected to a shrine of Saint Lawrence supposedly built by Aemilian himself, at the top of the mountain below which the monastery of San Millán is situated.

In the church there are also the Martyrdom of the Maccabees ( 1863 ) by Antonio Ciseri in the 3rd chapel on the right, the Meeting of St. Anne and St. Joachim, attributed to Michele Tosini, at the end of the right transept, the Assumption of the Virgin with Saints ( 1677 ), attributed to Baldassare Franceschini, at the end of the left transept.

1628, the Stadtholders and their Wives ( Amsterdam and Hague ), Charles Louis and Rupert, Charles I's nephews ( Louvre, St Petersburg, Combe Abbey and Willin ), and Lord Craven, ( National Portrait Gallery, London ). Honthorst's early style can be seen in the Lute-player ( 1614 ) at the Louvre, the Martyrdom of St John in Santa.

These concluding chapters describing Peter's crucifixion are preserved separately as the " Martyrdom of Peter " in three Greek manuscripts and in Coptic ( fragmentary ), Syriac, Ethiopic, Arabic, Armenian, and Slavonic versions.

The portal on the left face of the church, in splendid 15th century Gothic-Catalan style, probably came from the old Town Hall, destroyed by the earthquake in 1693 ; in the interior there are late 18th century stuccos and a wooden ceiling by Natale Bonaiuto, as well as two paintings ( The Martyrdom of St. Laurence and the Madonna delle Mercede ) by Filippo Paladini ( or Paladino ), born in Florence about 1544.
