In July 1620, the Mayflower sailed from Rotherhithe for Southampton on the south coast of England, to begin loading food and supplies for the voyage to New England.

In November 1620, the Mayflower landed at Plymouth, named after the major port city in Devon, England from which the Mayflower sailed.

John Alden ( 1599 – September 12, 1687 ) is said to be the first person from the Mayflower to set foot on Plymouth Rock in 1620.

Another theory is that John Alden came from Harwich, England, where there are records of an Alden family who were related by marriage to Christopher Jones, the Mayflower ’ s captain.

Altman was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Helen ( née Matthews ), a Mayflower descendant from Nebraska, and Bernard Clement Altman, a wealthy insurance salesman and amateur gambler, who came from an upper-class family.

Originally settled by the Nauset tribe, Eastham was the site where in 1621 a hunting expedition comprised from the crew of the sailing vessel Mayflower, which had stopped in Provincetown harbor on Cape Cod Bay after a rough crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, which led to the first encounter of the Pilgrims and the local Nauset Indians at First Encounter Beach.

He was a descendant of John Howland, ( c. 1599 – 1673 ) who was one of the Pilgrims who traveled from England to North America on the Mayflower, signed the Mayflower Compact, and helped found the Plymouth Colony.

Franklin's campaign to raise funds for the move were complicated by the Great Depression, but ended up including a gift from the City of Waterville-in an effort to keep Colby from relocating to Augusta, Waterville deeded on Mayflower Hill, near the outskirts of the city, to the college.

Places of interest in the Barbican include the National Marine Aquarium ( technically in Coxside ) which is one of the larger aquariums in Britain and has one of the deepest tanks in Europe ; the Elizabethan House, an old house built in the early 16th century, now used as a museum ; the Mayflower Steps near where the Pilgrims finally set off in the Mayflower for the New World in 1620, which is described in the nearby visitors ' centre ; and the studio gallery of the late painter and eccentric Robert Lenkiewicz, who lived and worked on the Barbican for many years deriving much of his inspiration and income from the local community.
