Meat Puppets are an American rock band formed in January 1980, in Phoenix, Arizona.

One of the more notable groups on the roster of SST Records ( who released most of their albums ), the Meat Puppets started as a punk rock band, but like most of their SST peers, the Meat Puppets established their own unique style, blending punk with country and psychedelic rock, and featuring Curt's warbling vocals.

The Meat Puppets later gained significant exposure when the Kirkwood brothers served as guest musicians on Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance in 1993.

The Meat Puppets have influenced various rock bands such as Nirvana Dinosaur Jr, and Pavement.

After briefly toying with the name The Bastions of Immaturity, they settled on the name Meat Puppets in June, 1980 after a song by Curt of the same name which appears on their first album.

Carducci suggested they sign with the label, and the Meat Puppets released their first album Meat Puppets in 1982, which among several new originals and a pair of heavily skewed Doc Watson and Bob Nolan covers, featured the songs " The Gold Mine " and " Melons Rising ", two tunes Derrick and Cris originally had written and performed as Atomic Bomb Club previously.

By the release of 1984's Meat Puppets II, the bandmembers " were so sick of the hardcore thing ," according to Bostrom.

Meat Puppets II turned the band into one of the leading bands on SST Records, and along with the Violent Femmes, the Gun Club and others, helped establish the genre called " cow punk ".

Meat Puppets II was followed by 1985's Up on the Sun.

The album's sound resembled the folk-rock of The Byrds more than punk, and some of the group's fans accused Meat Puppets of sounding dangerously like hippies and abandoning their punk roots.

Over the next decade, Meat Puppets remained on SST and released a series of albums while touring relentlessly.

As numerous bands from the seminal SST label and other kindred punk-oriented indies had before them, Meat Puppets grappled with the decision to switch to a major label.

In late 1993, Meat Puppets achieved mainstream popularity when Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, who became a fan after seeing them open for Black Flag, invited Cris and Curt to join him on MTV Unplugged for acoustic performances of " Plateau ", " Oh Me " and " Lake of Fire " ( all originally from Meat Puppets II ).

Subsequently, the Nirvana exposure and the strength of the single " Backwater " ( their only charting single ) helped lift Meat Puppets to new commercial heights.

Curt formed a new band in Austin, TX called the Royal Neanderthal Orchestra, but they changed their name to Meat Puppets for legal reasons and released a promotional EP entitled You Love Me in 1999, Golden Lies in 2000 and Live in 2002.

On January 20, 2007, The Meat Puppets brothers performed two songs during an Army of Anyone concert, at La Zona Rosa in Austin, Texas.

In 1996 a tribute album titled A Small Circle of Friends appeared that featured tracks by Mike Watt, Free Kitten, The Melvins, Meat Puppets, that dog., L7, The Posies, NOFX, Flea, Gumball, and others along with a version of " Circle One " performed by Pat Smear with Hole under the name " The Holez ".

Farley also performed impersonations of Tom Arnold, who gave Farley's eulogy at his private funeral ; Andrew Giuliani, Jerry Garcia, Meat Loaf, Norman Schwarzkopf, Dom DeLuise, Roger Ebert, Carnie Wilson, Newt Gingrich, Mindy Cohn, Mama Cass, Hank Williams, Jr., and Rush Limbaugh were among the celebrities and real-life figures he portrayed.

Both groups used songs first written or performed by Rocket From The Tombs as parts of their repertoires: the Dead Boys were known for " Ain't It Fun ," " What Love Is ," " Down in Flames ," " Caught With the Meat in Your Mouth " ( done by RFTT as " I'm Never Gonna Kill Myself Again ") and " Sonic Reducer "; Pere Ubu went on to reinterpret " Final Solution ," " Life Stinks " and " 30 Seconds Over Tokyo.

Meat Loaf performed two consecutive shows during his 20 / 20 Tour, on 1 and 2 March 1987, which were recorded and later released as a live album entitled Live at Wembley.

The Meat Puppets have played this song at most of their concerts, and even after the Meat Puppets, Curt Kirkwood has performed this song himself at most of his concerts as well as a unique version on a 2005 radio interview with KCXI.

Since then, Torry has also performed as a session singer ( singing on a number of 1970s UK TV adverts ) and as a live backing vocalist with Kevin Ayers, Olivia Newton-John, Shriekback, The Alan Parsons Project ( for which she also sang lead vocal on one track on their 1979 Eve album ), Procol Harum mainman Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher, Cerrone, Culture Club ( on their hit " The War Song "), Meat Loaf and Johnny Mercer.

Meat Loaf performed it live during the Bad Attitude tour.

Raven later performed a duet with rock musician Meat Loaf on a cover of the song " It's All Coming Back to Me Now ", released as the lead single from Loaf's tenth studio album Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose in October 2006.

In 2004 they performed with rock musician Meat Loaf ; the DVD release of this performance reached the number one position in the UK music DVD charts.
