Memphis is a city in the southwestern corner of the U. S. state of Tennessee, and the county seat of Shelby County.

Shelby County is located over four natural aquifers, one of which is recognized as the " Memphis sand aquifer " or simply as the " Memphis aquifer ".

The Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area ( MSA ), the 42nd largest in the United States, has a 2010 population of 1, 316, 100 and includes the Tennessee counties of Shelby, Tipton, and Fayette, as well as the Mississippi counties of DeSoto, Marshall, Tate, and Tunica, and Crittenden County, Arkansas.

Well-known writers from Memphis include American Civil War historian Shelby Foote.

Several major motion pictures, most of which were recruited and assisted by the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission, have been filmed in Memphis, including Making the Grade ( 1984 ), Elvis and Me ( 1988 ), Great Balls of Fire!

In recent years, there have been often rancorous discussions of the potential of a consolidation of unincorporated Shelby County and Memphis into a metropolitan government.

Consolidation was a referendum item on the 2010 ballot in Memphis and Shelby County, but failed with 85 % of the county voting against it.

The city is served by Memphis City Schools, while surrounding suburbs in other areas of Shelby County are served by Shelby County Schools.

However, on March 8, 2011, residents voted to disband Memphis City Schools, effectively merging it with the Shelby County School District.

The facility was built in 1991 and was originally owned and operated jointly by the city of Memphis and Shelby County.

The largest county by population bearing the name is the one in Tennessee, which is also the largest in the state ( Shelby County contains Memphis ).

Tipton County is part of the Memphis, TN – MS – AR Metropolitan Statistical Area, centered on Shelby County, which borders Tipton on the south.

The Bradley 3 Ranch, operated by matriarch Minnie Lou Bradley, is entirely in Childress County but has a Memphis ( Hall County ) mailing address.

In 1830, the community of Randolph, one of the earliest settlements in Tipton County, was the most important shipping point in Tennessee and an early rival of Memphis over commercial supremacy, but the fortunes declined in later years.

The first rail service in Tipton County was established in December 1855, when the Memphis and Ohio Railroad completed the route from Memphis to Nashville, running through what is now Mason.
