The Merced then descends rapids to meet Illilouette Creek, which drops from the valley rim to form Illilouette Fall.

Whitewater rafting is permitted throughout Merced River Canyon from the downstream half of Yosemite Valley to the entrance of Lake McClure.

The name " Railroad Flat " originates from the Yosemite Valley Railroad, which once travelled up Merced River Canyon into Yosemite Valley.

Despite these extensive water system developments, the Tuolumne is still a popular area in Yosemite National Park, although far less visited than the Merced River.

Merced is known as the " Gateway to Yosemite " and it is common for students to take day trips to Yosemite National Park where they can hike, snowboard, rock climb, and camp overnight.
