Commentators cite only three major financial firms from outside the banking industry ( the discount broker Charles Schwab, the insurance company Met Life, and the mutual fund company Franklin Resources ) for qualifying as financial holding companies after the GLBA became effective and before the late-2000s financial crisis.

Notable buildings in the district include the Flatiron Building, one of the oldest of the original New York skyscrapers, and just to east at 1 Madison Avenue is the Met Life Tower, built in 1909 and the tallest building in the world until 1913, when the Woolworth Building was completed.

It is nearly as tall as the Met Life Tower (, compared to for the Tower ), and taller than the Flatiron Building.

On March 8, 2010, Met Life announced its intent to purchase the international leader life-insurance business, American Life Insurance Company ( Alico ), from American International Group ( AIG ).

For example, while residents of northern New Jersey tend to favor the New York Giants who play at Met Life Stadium, those in the southern part of the state are Philadelphia Eagles fans.

It remained the home of Met Life until 1970 when the company moved to a new building to the south.

Notable buildings around Madison Square include the Flatiron Building, the Toy Center, the New York Life Building, the New York Merchandise Mart, the Appellate Division Courthouse, the Met Life Tower, and One Madison Park, a new 50-story condominium tower.

In 1991, Epic Comics published a four-issue comic book adaptation of seven of the stories: " Ill Met in Lankhmar " ( issue 1 ), " The Circle Curse " and " The Howling Tower " ( issue 2 ), " The Price of Pain Ease " and " Bazaar of the Bizarre " ( issue 3 ), and " Lean Times in Lankhmar " and " When the Sea King's Away " ( issue 4 ).

In 1882 the Met extended its line from Aldgate to a temporary station at Tower Hill, the District completed its line to Whitechapel and on 6 October 1884 the temporary station was replaced with a joint station and the inner circle was complete.

Proposals from the Met to extend west and then south from Paddington to South Kensington and east from Moorgate to Tower Hill were accepted and received Royal Assent on 29 July 1864.

In 1975 the new headquarters of Met Éireann, the Irish Meteorological Office, opened just off Glasnevin Hill, on the former site of Marlborough House.

In 1985, the Bloomington Port Authority purchased the Met Stadium site and in less than two years approved first site plans for Mall of America.

In 2004, an IKEA store opened on the west end of the former Met Center site.

The Mall of America, which opened in 1992, stands on the site of what is now nostalgically called " the Old Met.

For a time, there was talk of building a new park for the Twins on the old Met site that would be connected to the Mall of America.

The Brogdale weather station, which is run by a volunteer, only reports its data once a month ; Gravesend, which is a Met Office site, reports its data each hour.

Other outposts lodge in establishments such as the Joint Centre for Mesoscale Meteorology ( JCMM ) at University of Reading in Berkshire, the Joint Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Research ( JCHMR ) site at Wallingford in Oxfordshire, and there is also a Met Office presence at many Army and Air Force bases within the UK and abroad ( including frontline units in conflict zones ).

Finally there are some units at the golf driving range on the west of the village and the old Met Office site next door ( which is strictly in Colgate ).

Katz's was the site of Meg Ryan's and Estelle Reiner's famous " I'll have what she's having " fake orgasm scene in the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally ...; the table at which she and Billy Crystal sat, is marked with a sign that says " Where Harry met Sally ... hope you have what she had !".

The Met Office was established in 1854 as a small department within the Board of Trade under Robert FitzRoy as a service to mariners.

The Met Éireann building too was built in a somewhat pyramidal shape and is recognised as one of the most significant, smaller commercial buildings, to be erected in Dublin in the 1970s.

Hoving also spearheaded a number of building projects and renovations of the Met itself, from a controversial expansion of its galleries into Central Park to the construction of its underground parking garage.

The Met is situated in the Derby Hall, a large Victorian classical building on Market Street in the centre of Bury.

Since 1979 the building has been operated by a registered charity called Bury Metropolitan Arts Association, which uses it as a theatre and concert venue known as The Met.

From 1994-1997, the building, which has served time as Met Life's records warehouse, had its interior redesigned by Haines Lundberg Waehler and the exterior renovated, all at the cost of $ 300 million.

Among the late-20th-century baritones noted throughout the opera world for their Verdi performances was Vladimir Chernov, who emerged from the former USSR to sing at the Met.

Gatti-Casazza's successor as General Manager was the former Met bass Herbert Witherspoon, but barely six weeks into his term he collapsed dead at his desk from a heart attack.

To expand the Met's support to its national radio audience, the Met board's Eleanor Robson Belmont, the former actress and wife to industrialist August Belmont, founded the Metropolitan Opera Guild.
