Most tourist activity is centered on the island's northern coast, including the communities of Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio, as well as in Negril on the island's western tip.

The absence of large commercial centers, other than Kingston, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios has resulted in a poorly developed retail sector in Jamaica.

While Kingston and Montego Bay are home to a number of retail stores, including American fast-food franchises such as Domino's, Burger King, and KFC, the majority of the towns in the interior of the country, such as Mandeville, May Pen, and Spanish Town, have small shops, public markets, and temporary roadside stands.

The Highway 2000 project, which seeks ultimately to link Kingston with Montego Bay and the north coast, is currently undergoing a series of phases / legs.

Phase 2a is the highway between Old Harbour and Ocho Rios, and Phase 2b is the highway between Mandeville and Montego Bay.

There are two international airports in Jamaica with modern terminals, long runways, and the navigational equipment required to accommodate the large jet aircraft used in modern air travel: Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and Sangster International Airport in the resort town of Montego Bay.

Montego Freeport in Montego Bay also handles a variety of cargo like ( though more limited than ) the Port of Kingston, mainly agricultural products.

There are also three cruise ship piers along the island, in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Port Antonio.

The now disused Kingston railway station served the Kingston to Montego Bay main line with branches from Spanish Town to Ewarton, Bog Walk to Port Antonio, Linstead to New Works and May pen to Frankfield.

In the same year the Palisadoes Airport ( now Norman Manley International ) and the Montego Bay Airport now Sangster International Airport were established.

In 2011, Copa Airlines started flying to Toronto, Canada ; Brasilia, Brazil ; Porto Alegre, Brazil ; Chicago, United States ; Cúcuta, Colombia ; Montego Bay, Jamaica ; Monterrey, Mexico ; Asunción, Paraguay ; and Nassau, The Bahamas.

Destinations include Aruba, Nassau, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Cancun, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Curaçao.

Montego Bay is the capital of St. James Parish and the second largest city in Jamaica by area and the fourth by population ( after Kingston, Spanish Town and Portmore ).

The name " Montego Bay " is believed to have originated as a corruption of the Spanish word manteca (" lard "), allegedly because during the Spanish period it was the port where lard, leather, and beef were exported.

The island's last major slave revolt, the Christmas Rebellion or Baptist War ( 1831 – 1832 ) took place in the area around Montego Bay ; the leader of the revolt, Samuel Sharpe, was hanged there in 1832.

In 1980, Montego Bay was proclaimed a city by act of parliament, but this has not meant that it has acquired any form of autonomy as it continues to be an integral part of St. James Parish.

Ford Motor Company had the Lorain Assembly Plant in the city, mostly known for assembling the Ford Econoline ( E-series ) van, Ford Torino and Mercury Montego, and beginning in 1975 the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar ( through 1997 ); the plant ceased all production on December 14, 2005 because the UAW and Ford management were unable to come to terms on a new contract.

High performance Rover Metro, 200 and 400 GTi models had gone on sale in late 1989 and throughout 1990 as the MG version of the Metro was discontinued in 1990 and the versions of the Maestro and Montego were axed in 1991.

It was a strong competitor for other rivals of the early 1980s, including the Talbot Alpine, Peugeot 505 and Morris Ital and the Citroën BX, but later in its life it had to compete with the Austin Montego ( 1984 ), Peugeot 405 ( 1987 ) and Opel Vectra ( 1988 ).

Although the Montego had received a package of revisions for the 1989 model year, the Maestro remained essentially unchanged.

The MG badge-engineering project ( first implemented by Austin Rover in 1982 ) was ended in 1991 despite some reasonable success for its Maestro and Montego ranges ( the MG Metro had been discontinued after the facelift in 1990 ).

This was because the Mercury Montego had been discontinued and its models were absorbed into the Cougar lineup as a result while Ford Division renamed the Torino as LTD II.

The car had been in the pipeline since the late 1970s when the company's main competitors in this sector were the Morris Marina and Princess, but the Montego actually replaced the Morris Ital and Austin Ambassador which were the respective facelifted versions of those two cars.

By 1985, Austin Rover had launched a line-up of performance variants of its Metro and Maestro hatchbacks and the Montego saloon.

The Honda-based Triumph Acclaim had also been introduced in 1981 largely as a stop-gap to keep potential buyers interested in BL products until both the Montego and the Rover 200-series were launched in 1984.

Like the Maestro, the Montego suffered from its overly long development phase, which had been begun in 1975 and which was hampered throughout by the industrial turmoil that plagued both British Leyland and Austin Rover Group during this period.

The Montego had a standard 3. 0L Duratec DOHC 24 Valve V6, and 6-speed Aisin AW F21 ++ automatic.

The Montego was marketed in the US and Mexico, however it was not sold in Canada as the Mercury line had been discontinued there.

MyTravel Aircraft Engineering Caribbean, part of MTAE had bases throughout the Caribbean in Cancún, Cozumel, Montego Bay, Newark, New Jersey and Sanford, Florida, as well as seasonal bases at various Spanish, Greek and Turkish airports as well as Jeddah for the Hajj operaion.

Whilst auditioning for another short-lived band, Midnight Express, they met drummer Errol Kennedy ( born 9 June 1953, Montego Bay ) who had learned to drum in the Boys ' Brigade and Air Training Corps.

Still using the same basic chassis, 1970 models would receive dramatic new styling, but the base model would now be the Montego.

Many interior parts from the Maestro / Montego series continued to be used in various Land Rover models well into the late 1990s, for instance the Maestro instrument pack and switchgear were fitted to the Range Rover Classic from the mid 1980s onward, as well as on the Series I Discovery from launch until the 1995 facelift.

From 1995, a decade after the Montego was introduced, the 416i and 420i names would be used, but on the unrelated Rover 400 Series.

The talking dashboard fitted to high-end models ( and initially used to promote the Montego as an advanced high-tech offering ) was prone to irritating faults and came to be regarded as something of an embarrassment by BL and the British press.

Only available as a four-door saloon, the 200 series was intended to be more upmarket than the company's Maestro and Montego models, which the 200 Series came in between in terms of size.

At the Chicago Auto Show on February 7, 2007, Ford CEO Alan Mulally unveiled a refreshed version of the Mercury Montego sedan and announced that the new name of the car would be " Sable ," due to customer recognition and dealer demand.

This was originally intended as a stopgap measure until the Maestro / Montego models were to be ready for production in 1983.

Production of the Ital was swapped from Cowley to Longbridge in September 1982 to allow the Cowley plant to be upgraded for production of the forthcoming Austin Montego and Austin Maestro.

This was due as Rover's only offering in the large family car segment at the time was the ageing Montego and this gap in the company's line-up needed to be filled.

It has been the best selling car to be built at the plant since the Maestro and Montego in the 1980s.
