The church has an open canon which includes four scriptural texts: the Bible ( both Old and New Testaments ), the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.

Mormons have a scriptural canon consisting of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and a collection of revelations and writings by Joseph Smith known as the Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price.

Members of the Temple Lot church believe that Smith was wrong to assume the office of church president, an office they deem to not have been provided for in either the Bible or the Book of Mormon, their two scriptural standards.

Mormon apologists give several reasons to explain why the Lectures were removed from the scriptural volumes of the church.

While the Community of Christ is somewhat more in line doctrinally with mainline Protestantism, they also believe in the Book of Mormon and an open scriptural canon, and place great emphasis upon peacemaking and similar pursuits.

The vision of Moses and the Book of Enoch works were originally published separately by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( LDS Church ) in 1851, but later combined and published as the Book of Moses in the Pearl of Great Price, one of the four books of the Mormon scriptural canon.

) As Prophet, Seer and Revelator, the Prophet – President is the Community of Christ's spiritual leader and can present revelations to the church to be added to the Doctrine and Covenants — an open canon of scripture, which stands with the Bible and the Book of Mormon as sacred text.

The original Articles were never included in the Mormon canon ; however, the language of much of the Articles found its way into various sections of the Book of Commandments and the Doctrine and Covenants, such as D & C 20.

Though never part of the official Mormon canon, Lectures on Faith were included as part of the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants.

By the mid-1840s, many non-Mormons in Hancock County felt threatened by growing Mormon political power, commercial rivalries, and a new religion with at least two elements that were hard to digest in the religious community of that time: first, Latter Day Saints had a somewhat different perspective on the nature of God from traditional Protestants ; second, the claim of modern revelation, together with the claim of new scripture, opened the canon of the Bible.

Unlike more prevalent Biblical ( non-Mormon ) fundamentalist groups, who generally base their authority upon an unchanging and closed canon of scripture, Mormon fundamentalists generally hold to a concept of " continuing revelation " or " progressive revelation ", in which the canon of scripture may be continually augmented.

The word " Zion " appears at least 45 times in the Book of Mormon, a key part of the Latter-day Saint canon, and nearly 200 times in the LDS version of the Doctrine and Covenants, a part of its canon consisting of what members believe to be modern-day revelation and written down by Smith mostly in the 19th century.

According to Smith's account, and also according to the book's narrative, the Book of Mormon was originally written in otherwise unknown characters referred to as " reformed Egyptian " engraved on golden plates.

The Book of Mormon is the earliest of the unique writings of the Latter Day Saint movement, the denominations of which typically regard the text not only as scripture but also as a historical record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas.

Hyrum Smith, brother of Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith also attended the college in his teens.

Utah Mormons ( as well as Mormons living in the Intermountain West ) are on average more culturally and / or politically conservative than those living in some cosmopolitan centers elsewhere in the U. S. Utahns self-identifying as Mormon also attend church somewhat more on average than Mormons living in other states.

In a separate context, members of minuscule " progressive " breakaway groups have also adopted the label Liberal Mormon.

The Book of Mormon is also believed to have been written by ancient prophets, and is viewed as a companion to the Bible.

However, the name " Mormon " is also used in the Book of Mormon as a place name ( e. g. Waters of Mormon ), which Ancient America Foundation scholar David Lamb uses to offer an alternate explanation for the title:

No doubt his father also bore the name Mormon for the same reason.

Comparison of the Mormon and Muslim prophets still occurs today, sometimes for derogatory or polemical reasons but also for more scholarly ( and neutral ) purposes.

Before the 1890 Mormon Manifesto against plural marriage, Mormonism and Islam also shared in the belief in and practice of plural marriage, a practice now held in common by Islam and various branches of Mormon fundamentalism.

In distinction with the LDS Church, Mormon fundamentalists also often believe in a number of other doctrines taught and practiced by Brigham Young in the 19th century, which the LDS Church has either abandoned, repudiated, or put in abeyance.

" Latter-day Saints also believe the " Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ be a companion volume of scripture to the Bible ,... and of the truthfulness of the messages in the Bible.

The Book of Omni is notable also for being the last of the books contained on the Small Plates of Nephi, one of two major divisions of the gold plates which Joseph Smith, Jr. translated to obtain the Book of Mormon.

Other events include the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, it being a record made by the ancestors of the Indians, and also what is believed to be the founding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, although it is not mentioned by name, yet there are described several events which imply movements and church formation.

Future events are also taken into account, such as the coming forth of scripture even after the Book of Mormon, that would make truths known which were taken out from the New Testament, a concept discussed in the several passages of this vision.

The eastern half of the trail was also used by travelers on the California Trail ( from 1843 ), Bozeman Trail ( from 1863 ), and Mormon Trail ( from 1847 ) which used of the same eastern trails before turning off to their separate destinations.

* Words and Music: Only four musicals have won the Tony Award for Best Musical when a person had ( co -) written the Book ( non-sung dialogue and storyline ) and the Score ( music and lyrics ): 1958 winner The Music Man ( Meredith Willson – award for Book and Score did not exist that year ), 1986 winner The Mystery of Edwin Drood ( Rupert Holmes – who also won for Book and Score ), 1996 winner Rent ( Jonathan Larson – who also won for Book and Score ), and 2011 winner The Book of Mormon ( Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone also won for Book and Score ).

However, it can also be found in some editions of King James Version Bibles and the Book of Mormon.

In this scheme, the Utah Mormon group includes the non-polygamous organizations descending from those Mormons who followed Brigham Young to what is now Utah.

Cultural Mormonism includes a lifestyle promoted by the Mormon institutions, and includes cultural Mormons who identify with the culture, but not necessarily the theology.

Mormon theology includes three main movements.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( LDS Church ) includes the Book of Mormon as a foundational reference.

* The Mormon Miracle Pageant is performed every summer in Manti, Utah by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and includes a visitation by Jesus Christ, shortly after His resurrection, to inhabitants of ancient America, as recorded in The Book of Mormon.

The Book of Mormon includes somewhat similar statements to Matthew 6, about teachings to the people of Nephi:

According to its text, the Book of Mormon contains the writings of ancient prophets who lived on the American continent from approximately 2200 BC to AD 421, describes the visit of Jesus after his resurrection and his establishing his church among the indigenous people, and includes important gospel truths lost during the Great Apostasy.

Scotts Bluff National Monument in western Nebraska includes an important 19th century landmark on the Oregon Trail and Mormon Trail.

Whitmer's reasoning includes his charge that Smith was to have " pretended to no other gift " except the translation of the Book of Mormon, and was never to be more than a " first elder " among " fellow elders " in the fledgling church.

Statistics Canada includes 44 churches in its 2001 Protestant definition, including the Mormon denominations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Community of Christ ( formerly Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ).

* The musical The Book of Mormon ( by the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Avenue Q collaborator Robert Lopez ) includes a reference to the planet Kolob.

This includes the rostrum behind the pulpit facing the audience, which provides seating at general conference for 158 general authorities and general officers of the church and the 360-voice Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Church News includes news of the LDS Church and has been published since 1931, while the Mormon Times is about " the people, faith and culture associated with the church ".

The site also includes a replica of the Mormon ferry that was operated there between 1847 and 1849, as well as a model of part of the bridge that later replaced the ferry.
