Both parties tried their luck in cartel with a bigger party, N-VA allying with the Christian Democrats of CD & V, and Spirit with the Flemish socialists of SP. a.

The left-liberal wing founded Spirit, later called the Social Liberal Party, while the more traditional Flemish nationalist wing continued under the banner Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie ( N-VA ).

The enormous growth of N-VA is generally explained as caused by an influx of " moderate " Flemish voters who do not support the party's eventual aim of Flemish independence but do want consistent and far-reaching reforms with greater autonomy for the regions, something they no longer trust the traditional parties to be able to achieve.

After the election the New-Flemish Alliance ( N-VA ) also joined the EFA.

The majority in the Provincial Council is currently formed by CD & V / N-VA, Open VLD and SP. A-Spirit.

The Deputies are currently divided among the majority parties as follows: two for CD & V / N-VA, two for Open VLD and two for SP. A-Spirit.

CD & V and N-VA had allied themselves for the 2000 election, and formed a coalition with the VLD.

The coalition between VLD and CD & V was renewed, but without the N-VA.
