Asimov describes what has become of the Spacer worlds of Solaria and Aurora, described extensively in The Naked Sun and the Robots of Dawn, respectively.

The first four robot novels The Caves of Steel ( 1953 ), The Naked Sun ( 1956 ), The Robots of Dawn ( 1983 ), and Robots and Empire ( 1985 ) make up the Elijah Baley ( sometimes " Lije Baley ") series, and are mysteries starring the Terran Elijah Baley and his humaniform robot partner, R. Daneel Olivaw.

" Mirror Image ", one of the short stories from The Complete Robot anthology, is also set in this time period ( between The Naked Sun and The Robots of Dawn ), and features both Baley and Olivaw.

In The Naked Sun, a major plot point is that R. Daneel is able to masquerade, on the planet Solaria, as a human Auroran and goes unrecognized by both robots and Solarian humans as a humaniform robot.

In these adaptations, Elijah Baley was portrayed by Peter Cushing ( The Caves of Steel ) and Paul Maxwell ( The Naked Sun ), R. The novel was reprinted in with the Foundation Trilogy, The Naked Sun and I, Robot in a hardback selected works edition in 1982 by Littlehampton Book Services.

Olivaw appears in Asimov's Robot and Foundation series, most notably in the novels The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, The Robots of Dawn, Robots and Empire, Prelude to Foundation, Forward the Foundation, Foundation and Earth.

Daneel's cerebroanalysis capabilities are absent in The Naked Sun, The Robots of Dawn and Robots and Empire.

Baley met Olivaw again in The Naked Sun, where he is sent to the Spacer planet Solaria to investigate the murder of Rikainne Delmarre, the husband of Gladia Delmarre.

It is shown that Olivaw learns from Baley's methods of investigation in both books, which leads to him playing a larger role in the Naked Sun.

In the 1969 British television adaptation of The Naked Sun ( an episode of the BBC2 series Out of the Unknown ), Olivaw was played by David Collings.
