He walked through the deep snow of a hard winter the 105 miles from Salem to the head of Narragansett Bay where the local Wampanoags offered him shelter and took him to the winter camp of their chief sachem, Massasoit, where he resided for 3 and a half months.

While I-95 in Rhode Island takes a diagonal path to Providence, U. S. 1 continues east along the coast through Westerly to Wakefield, where it turns north and follows Narragansett Bay.

More were sent to the West Indies, and others to the Mohegan and Narragansett, enemies of the Pequot who had allied themselves with the English colonies.

The outcasts rowed over to Narragansett territory, and having secured land from Canonicus and Miantonomi, chief sachems of the Narragansetts, Williams established a settlement with twelve " loving friends ".

With the removal of the Pequot, the Narragansett, led by Miantonomo, claimed the former Pequot territory, which the colonists had also claimed.

When the English threatened to invade Narragansett territory, the Narragansett signed a peace treaty.

The Narragansett had warred with and lost territory to the Pequot in 1622.

European settlement in their territory did not begin until 1635, and in 1636 Roger Williams acquired land use rights from the Narragansett sachems.

Also in one of the final actions of the war, troops from Connecticut hunted and killed " King Philip ", as they called the Narragansett war-leader Metacom, on Rhode Island's territory.

At the earliest stage of colonial settlement it was " The Narragansett Country ", and so named after the Algonquin tribe of the same name and its tributary tribe the ( Eastern ) Niantics, whose territory it was, and these held power in the area long after the Wampanoags to the east had lost most of their territory to the Plymouth Colony.

The case of the " King's Province " was finally & permanently decided by His Majesty's Commissioners in Rhode Island's favor, and so " The King's Province " became " The King's County ", and this last sobriquet lasted until after the American Revolution, at which time it seemed most appropriate for Rhode Island's oldest sovereign territory & most recent county to assume the name of a frequent & beloved visitor at a number of Narragansett Planter homes, the new Republic's General & now President Washington.

Weld created a fraudulent document ( known as the " Narragansett Patent ") to bolster the Massachusetts claim to the territory.
