It is officially part of the Nashville-Davidson – Murfreesboro – Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area, although it is located just beyond the ring of " bedroom communities " in the Nashville metropolitan area.

Reflecting the city's position in state government, Nashville is home to the Tennessee Supreme Court's courthouse for Middle Tennessee.
