In the Nath tradition, Dattatreya is recognized as an Avatar or incarnation of the Lord Shiva and as the Adi-Guru ( First Teacher ) of the Adinath Sampradaya of the Nathas.

Stories recounted in many holy books of the Bhagawata Sampradaya sect about Dnyaneshwar ’ s life are full of miracles, such as the baking of bread ( mānde, or roti in Hindi ) on his heated back, and his making a wall move. This was because he was yogi who followed the yogic methods of Nath Sampradaya.

According to the International Nath Order of the Nath Sampradaya, the Avadhuta Gita is a text of Advaita Vedanta sung by Dattatreya and recorded by his disciples Swami and Kartika.

According to the International Nath Order of the Nath Sampradaya, the " Avadhuta Gita is a distillation of the sublime realization sung by Dattatreya and transcribed by two of his disciples, Swami and Kartika.

Together, Matsyendranath and Gorakshanath founded the Nath Sampradaya line of saints.

The reasons for its being so sacred are: Godavari river originates from this place ; its a place of Tri-Sandhya Gayatri ; the birth place of Lord Ganesha ; a place of the first Nath of Nath Sampradaya consisting of Gorakhnath and others ; a place where Nivrittinath was made to imbibe the holy knowledge by his Guru Gahininath ; and also a place where Nivrittinath made his brothers and sister attain the self by his preaching.

It is related to the broader Nath Sampradaya.

Kurt Keutzer ( 2002 ) discusses the Kundalini yoga, Vajrayana, Nath Sampradaya, Mahasiddha and Milarepa:

It was Matsyendranath who became known as the founder of the specific stream of yogis known as the Nath Sampradaya.

The latter came to eclipse his Master in importance in many of the branches and sub-sects of the Nath Sampradaya.

Reference to the Adinath Sampradaya is pointed out by Rajmohan Nath ( 1964 ) in the following list of the twelve sub-sects:

It is said that Nath lived in a cave near the Tapkeswhar temple to Shiva for five years, serving his guru intermittently.

However it is said that a copy of Zafarnama, written in the hand of Guru Ji, was found with the Mahant of Patna Sahib in 1890 and one Babu Jagan Nath made a copy ; this copy was somehow misplaced by him.

Phanishwar Nath ' Renu ' is best known for promoting the voice of the contemporary rural India through the genre of ' Aanchalik Upanyas ' ( Regional Story ), and is placed amongst the pioneering Hindi writers who brought regional voices into the mainstream Hindi literature.
