The island now forms the Baker Island National Wildlife Refuge and is an unincorporated and unorganized territory of the U. S. Its defense is the responsibility of the United States ; though uninhabited, it is visited annually by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

On June 27, 1974, Secretary of the Interior Rogers Morton created Baker Island National Wildlife Refuge which was expanded in 2009 to add submerged lands within of the island.

Along with six other islands, the island was administered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Pacific Remote Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

One subspecies, the Masked Bobwhite ( Colinus virginianus ridgewayi ), is listed as endangered with wild populations located in Sonora, Mexico and a reintroduced population in Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in Southern Arizona.

The other types of protected areas in Costa Rica are National Wildlife Refuges, Biological Reserves, Protection Zones, and Absolute Nature Reserves.

An important stopover for migratory birds, the mudflats and marsh are the location of the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.

It is partly owned by the National Trust who acquired it in 1910 and partly managed by the Somerset Wildlife Trust.

Its eastern terminus is in Fremont, near Newark in the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and its western terminus is in Menlo Park.

An accessible portion of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge lies immediately north of the western bridge terminus, where the Ravenswood trail runs.

The long-range objective is to hold the damage from destructive agencies below the level which would seriously interfere with intensive management of the National Forest System under principles of multiple use and high-level sustained yield of products and services.

In the 10-year period, it is proposed that insect and disease control on the National Forest System be stepped up to a level of prevention, detection, and control of insect and disease infestations that will substantially reduce the occurrence of large infestations toward the end of the initial period.

It is proposed that in 10 years all commercial timberlands, all critical watersheds, and other lands in the National Forest System developed or proposed for intensive use will be given protection from fire adequate to meet the fire situation in the worst years and under serious peak loads.
