Alexandria is served by the Norfolk & Southern Railway with a connector which allows rail traffic to flow smoothly between lines servicing east – west and north – south destinations.

Rail service is provided by the city-owned Columbia Terminal ( COLT ) Railroad, which runs from the north side of Columbia to Centralia and a connection to the Norfolk Southern Railway.

The North Norfolk Railway ( NNR )– also known as the " Poppy Line " – is a heritage steam railway in Norfolk, England, running between the coastal town of Sheringham and Holt, It cuts through the countryside to the east of Weybourne with views of its windmill and passes through the well preserved country station which also houses a locomotive shed together with a carriage maintenance and restoration centre.

The Bure Valley Railway is a minimum gauge heritage railway in Norfolk, within The Broads National Park.

The railway is built on the trackbed of the East Norfolk Railway ( ENR ).

The navigation was reasonably successful until 1880, when railway competition arrived, in the form of the East Norfolk Railway, which followed the Bure valley.

In 1965, within a year of the closure of this line, the North Norfolk Railway was formed to restore part of the line as an independent heritage steam railway.

Demopolis is served by several railway companies, including Norfolk Southern Railway, BNSF Railway, and the Alabama and Gulf Coast Railway.

In June 1978 the final train passed through Colome on its way back to Norfolk and the railway line was abandoned.

Cape Charles still serves as a terminal for railway barges that carry rail cars from the former Eastern Shore Railroad which is now Bay Coast Railroad across the mouth of the Bay to Norfolk.

There was an Eye Green railway station on the line between Peterborough and Norfolk, which closed many years ago.

Wisbech once had three railway branch lines: the 1847 / 1848-1968 GER March to Watlington ( junction ), Norfolk ( on the Ely to King's Lynn main line ) via Wisbech East ( Victoria Road ); the 1866-1959 M & GN Peterborough to Sutton Bridge via Wisbech North ( on Harecroft Road ); and the 1883 / 1884-1966 GER Wisbech and Upwell Tramway.

On June 23, 1997, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern filed a joint application with the Surface Transportation Board for authority to purchase, divide and operate the assets of the 11, 000-mile Consolidated Rail Corporation ( Conrail ), which had been created in 1976 by bringing together several ailing Northeastern railway systems into a government-owned corporation.

The VGN had a very major grade at Clark's Gap, West Virginia, and tried ever-larger steam locomotives before turning to an alternative already in use by one of its neighboring competitors, Norfolk & Western Railway: a railway electrification system.

It provided local, suburban and express services from Liverpool Street station in the City of London to destinations in the railway franchise known as the Greater Anglia network, stretching from north and east Greater London to Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk in the East of England ( East Anglia ).

Sections of the former railway lines have been protected from development that would be prejudicial to the creation of railway transport links by North Norfolk District Council and Norfolk County Council.
