Hunter College – so-named in 1914, originally Female Normal and High School and later the Normal College – had existed since 1870, and later expanded into the Bronx in the early 20th century with what became Herbert Lehman College, but CCNY and Hunter resisted merging.

The state legislature selected Ellensburg as the location for the then Normal School as a consolation prize.

In 1883 Parker left Massachusetts to become Principal of the Cook County Normal School in Chicago, a school that also served to train teachers in Parker ’ s methods.

The following year, Wells won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science ( later the Royal College of Science in South Kensington, now part of Imperial College London ) in London, studying biology under Thomas Henry Huxley.

Upon leaving the Normal School of Science, Wells was left without a source of income.

James Madison University ( also known as JMU, Madison, or James Madison ) is a public coeducational research university located in Harrisonburg, Virginia, U. S. Founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the university has undergone four name changes before settling with James Madison University.

It was originally called The State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg.

In 1914, the name of the university was changed to the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg.

The university was established in 1910 as the Kent State Normal School as a teacher-training school.

Deciding that he would like to become a professional teacher, Mao enrolled at a teacher training college, the Fourth Normal School of Changsha, which had high standards yet low fees and cheap accommodation.

Several months later, it amalgamated with the prestigious First Normal School of Changsha, widely seen as the best school in Hunan province ; Mao biographer Stuart Schram would later note that the environment of the school provided " an ideal training ground for his apprenticeship as a political worker.

In the subsequent reorganization of the provincial administration, Mao was appointed as the headmaster of the junior section of the First Normal School.

Northern Michigan University was established in 1899 by the Michigan Legislature as Northern State Normal School with the original purpose of providing teacher preparation programs in Michigan's then-wild and sparsely populated Upper Peninsula.

In 1946 the College was forced by postwar enrollment to move from Craigdarroch to the Lansdowne campus of the Provincial Normal School ( This is the current location of the Camosun College Lansdowne Campus ).

** Plattsburgh Normal School ( Plattsburgh, New York )

* May 2 – The California State Normal School ( later San Jose State University ) is created by an Act of the California Legislature.

Born in Virginia, she had studied at Hampton Institute and the Massachusetts State Normal School at Framingham.

Lewiston State Normal School, now Lewis-Clark State College, was established in 1893, as was another normal school or teacher education college, now defunct, in the south at Twin Falls.

In March 1881, after heavy lobbying by Los Angeles residents, the California State Legislature authorized the creation of a southern branch of the California State Normal School ( which later became San Jose State University ) in downtown Los Angeles to train teachers for the growing population of Southern California.

The State Normal School at Los Angeles opened on August 29, 1882, on what is now the site of the Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library system.

Xinmin Normal College was established in 1906 and is older than the university itself.

In 1891, the county became home to the state's first and only publicly supported institution of higher learning for women, the State Normal and Industrial School.

Later known as Louisiana State Normal College and Northwestern State College, the institution is now Northwestern State University.

The Liberal Normal School and Business Institute was another institution organized by Walser to promote liberal education free from the bias of Christian theology.

Founded as Spearfish Normal School in 1883, it is still largely a teacher training institution, although its mission has expanded far beyond to include masters programs in Integrative Genomics and Business Administration.

Salisbury University, originally called the Maryland State Normal School, was opened on September 7, 1925 as a two-year institution to train elementary school teachers to help fill the teacher shortage in the state of Maryland.

During the Great Depression, Maryland extended the required course of study at Normal Schools from two years to three years, and to four years in 1934, paving the way for the institution to become Maryland State Teachers College one year later.

Among its supporters were judge and future Supreme Court Justice, David Davis and local businessman and land holder Jesse W. Fell whose friend, Abraham Lincoln, was the attorney hired by the Board of Education to draw up legal documents to secure the school's funding Founded as Illinois State Normal University, its name was reflective of its primary mission as a teacher training institution ( at that time called a normal school ).

In 1964 as the institution expanded and moved toward a full liberal arts curriculum, its name was changed to Illinois State University at Normal, and in 1968, to Illinois State University.

By 1899, the school had been made a state institution by the Texas Legislature, becoming North Texas State Normal College under its fourth president, Joel Sutton Kendall.

The College of New Jersey was established on February 9, 1855 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature mandating the creation of a state normal school, making the New Jersey State Normal School the first teacher training institution in New Jersey and the ninth in the United States.

A coeducational institution, Cullowhee Normal trained over two thousand teachers by the mid-1920s.

Jordanhill College of Education can trace its origins to the Dundas Vale Normal Seminary which, when it opened under David Stow in 1837, was the first purpose-built institution in Europe for the training of teachers.

The institution was granted a charter in 1910 as a normal school, specializing in teacher training and education, as part of the Lowry Normal School Bill that authorized two new normal schools in the state of Ohio.

In 1923, the San Diego Normal School became San Diego State Teachers College, " a four-year public institution controlled by the state Board of Education.

Opened in 1929 as the New Jersey State Normal School at Jersey City, the institution was renamed New Jersey State Teachers College at Jersey City in 1935 and Jersey City State College in 1958, becoming a liberal arts college in 1968.

The Board of Education of State Normal Schools selected Chadron as the location of its fourth institution in January, 1910.

On April 7, 1884, the state of Virginia acquired the property of the Farmville Female College, and in October of the same year the Normal School opened with 110 students enrolled, making it the first state institution of higher learning for women in Virginia.

The first mixed-sex institution of higher learning in China was the Nanjing Higher Normal School, which was renamed National Central University and Nanjing University.

Conducted in January or February of each year, this event commemorates the opening of the institution in 1870 when 23 students presented themselves to a faculty of three on the first day of classes at the Indiana State Normal School.

In 1922 it became a four-year institution and changed its name to the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College, awarding its first degrees under that name in 1925.

Beginning with 29 students and four faculty in an abandoned railroad depot on State Street in the heart of the city, the Normal School was the first New York State-chartered institution of higher education.

Dedicated to training New York students as schoolteachers and administrators, by the early 1890s the “ School ” had become the New York State Normal College and, with a revised four-year curriculum in 1905, became the first public institution of higher education in New York to be granted the power to confer the bachelor's degree.

On January 15, 1866, this institution, known as the Maryland State Normal School ( MSNS ), officially opened its doors.
