The Salween (, ;, ; ; ; Shan: ;, ; also spelled Salwine ; Salawin, Thai ; Gyalmo Ngulchu, Tibetan ; Thanlwin, Burmese ; Nu Jiang, which means " Angry River " in Chinese ( The river is actually named after the Nu tribe that lives in the area but Chinese being no phonetic script had to use a character with a similar sound as Nu and that happen to be the character for angry ), is a river, about long, that flows from the Tibetan Plateau into the Andaman Sea in Southeast Asia.

There is also a sparse distribution of Nu in Weixi County in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and Zayu County in Tibet Autonomous Region, particularly at the border between Yunnan and Tibet.

It is mainly celebrated by the Nu living in Bijiang, Fugong, Gongshan, Lanping and Weixi counties of Yunnan Province, although Losar is also celebrated by the Tibetan Buddhist Nu.

Like most tribes in British Columbia, the Yaqan Nu ’ kiy did not have a treaty defining their rights regarding their territory, but a careful and more or less cooperative treaty negotiation process with the government of Canada has been ongoing for decades.
