Additional educational services are available through the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES ( New York State boards of cooperative educational services ( BOCES )), located in nearby Ogdensburg, NY.

Ogdensburg is home to the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, a mental health service provider offering both inpatient and outpatient services.

With the opening of the Black River Canal in 1851, the Rome Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad in 1867, and The Lowville and Beaver Railroad in 1906, industries flourished including AMF ( manufacturer of bowling pins ) and Kraft ( the largest cream cheese plant in the country ).

Ogdensburg was an important trading city and station in the development of railroads in northern New York and southeastern Canada ; the Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad ( 1849 ), Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad ( 1853 ) and Portland and Ogdensburg Railway ( never completed ), all involved lines through the area.

Beginning in 1873, the village was served by the Clayton Division of the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad ( RW & O ), which later became a part of the New York Central network.

Claude de Lorimier, a British Indian agent from Montreal, traveled west to Oswegatchie ( Ogdensburg, New York ), where there was a fort garrisoned by a company of the 8th Regiment of Foot under the command of British Captain George Forster.

The Essex County Railroad ( chartered 1864 ), Montpelier and St. Johnsbury Railroad ( chartered 1866 ) and Lamoille Valley Railroad ( chartered 1867 ) were consolidated into the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad in 1875 as their Vermont Division.

He was a director of the Northern Railroad ( later the Rutland Railroad ), but resigned to help found the Ogdensburg, Clayton and Rome Railroad.

When the war broke out, a flourishing illicit trade was soon established between Ogdensburg and Prescott, Upper Canada ( later to become the province of Ontario in 1841 ), on the Northern side of the Saint Lawrence River.

During the War of 1812 the regiment was involved with the capturing of Ogdensburg and as well the Battle of Chrysler's Farm.

King linked Canada more and more closely to the United States, signing an agreement with Roosevelt at Ogdensburg, New York in August 1940 that provided for the close cooperation of Canadian and American forces, despite the fact that the U. S. remained officially neutral until the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The three companies were consolidated on August 7, 1875 to form the Vermont Division of the Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad, and the construction that had started was continued, except that the part of the M & SJ west of West Danville was never built.

The changes would have lengthened the runs, running from Burlington to Bellows Falls or Ogdensburg on one day, staying over and then running back the next day.

Under current operating orders they would make the run from Rutland to Burlington or Bellows Falls and back in a day, or from Malone, New York running out and back to Ogdensburg and Burlington.

She was tutored at home and completed her education at a finishing school with the “… expectation that one day she would become a fine wife and mother for some young man of equal or greater social standing than the Averells .” Mary ’ s father, William J. Averell was a successful New York banker and president of the Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad.

During the War of 1812 Ogdensburg and much of the town was captured by British forces.

The Ogdensburg area may have been populated by more Tories and Federalists than was previously thought.

From there, it passes Gananoque, Brockville, Ogdensburg, Massena, Cornwall, Montreal, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City before draining into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, one of the largest estuaries in the world.

Henri Le Caron, who, while acting as a secret agent of the British government, held the position of " Inspector-General of the Irish Republican Army ," asserts that he distributed fifteen thousand stands of arms and almost three million rounds of ammunition in the care of the many trusted men stationed between Ogdensburg, New York and St. Albans, Vermont, in preparation for the intended raid.

However, local authorities claim that the mine adit descending at the Sterling Hill Mine in Ogdensburg is unofficially the lowest elevation in New Jersey.

At that time Ogdensburg was the county seat.

The selection of Canton as the county was a compromise by the state legislature to end competition between factions supporting Ogdensburg and Potsdam for the county seat.

In the early 1870s, the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad carried tourists and freight to Sebago Lake Station in Standish, where steamboats took them to various landings around the lake.

In 1875, the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad completed its line up through Crawford Notch.

The Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad began service to Glen station at nearby Bartlett in the early 1870s, and several hotels were built to accommodate a growing infusion of tourists.

In 1874, the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad reached Fabyan Station, an important junction joined the next year by the Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad.

For grades 9-12, public school students attend Wallkill Valley Regional High School which is composed of students from Franklin Borough, Hardyston Township, Hamburg Borough and Ogdensburg Borough, and is part of the Wallkill Valley Regional High School District.
