General Motors introduced the Chevrolet Lumina APV, Oldsmobile Silhouette, and Pontiac Trans Sport in 1990.

With the Aurora, Oldsmobile tried to ride the praise of the car by launching other models that borrowed styling cues from the Aurora such as the mid-size Intrigue and compact Alero, as well as the redesigned Eighty-Eight, Silhouette, Cutlass, and Bravada.

Saviano once starred in a television commercial for the Oldsmobile Silhouette.

The Oldsmobile Silhouette and its siblings, the Pontiac Trans Sport ( later the Montana ) and Chevrolet Lumina APV ( later the Venture ), were a trio of minivans that débuted in late 1989 as 1990 models.

The very first 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette rolled off the assembly line on August 1, 1989.

At the time that the Oldsmobile Silhouette and its siblings were conceived, no one had tried to market a stylish or sporty minivan, and GM felt that this represented a potentially large market segment.

Sales were respectable, so the decision was made to retain the original styling on the European-version: from the 1994 model year onwards, the Oldsmobile Silhouette was transformed into a Pontiac Trans Sport by the addition of Pontiac badging and wheels.

The final 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette rolled off the assembly line on May 17, 1996.

The final Oldsmobile Silhouette rolled off the assembly line on March 31, 2004.

The spiritual successor to the Oldsmobile Silhouette within the General Motors lineup is the Buick Terraza ( 2005-2007 ), which was built on an updated version of the U platform and occupied the luxury minivan slot previously occupied by the Silhouette.

Had the Oldsmobile division not been discontinued it would be likely that the Silhouette would have been kept for the third generation of the GM minivans.

Olds Motor Works soon adopted the popular name of its vehicles, Oldsmobile ( which, along with Buick and Cadillac, became founding divisions of General Motors Corporation ).

The Oldsmobile was an immediate success in 1949 and 1950, and all the automobile manufacturers could not help noticing its higher sales of the Oldsmobile 88 to the buying public.

Oldsmobile was a brand of American automobile produced for most of its existence by General Motors.

While Oldsmobile only sold 725 Limiteds in its three years of production, the car is best remembered for winning a race against the famed 20th Century Limited train, an event immortalized in the painting " Setting the Pace " by William Hardner Foster.

In 1937, Oldsmobile was a pioneer in introducing a four-speed semi-automatic transmission called the " Automatic Safety Transmission ", although this accessory was actually built by Buick, which would offer it in its own cars in 1938.

When compared side to side, Oldsmobile looked dated next to its price-point competitor DeSoto.

The Oldsmobile that emerged in 1958 bore little resemblance to the design of its forerunners ; instead the car emerged as a large, over-decorated " chromemobile.

From 1948 until 2004, Oldsmobile used a variety of logos employing a rocket theme that played off its Rocket line of V-8 engines.

Those trials were sanctioned and supervised by NASCAR. Note: between 1964 and 1966, Oldsmobile named its least expensive full size model the Oldsmobile Jetstar 88 which the Jetstar I was not related to, and priced $ 500 –$ 600 below the Jetstar I.

In an attempt to modernize marketing efforts as Oldsmobile's fortunes declined, the " Delta " name was dropped in 1989, but the car lived on as the Eighty-Eight until Oldsmobile ended its production in 1999.

At that time, each General Motors division produced its own V8 engines, and in 1977, Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, Pontiac and Buick each produced a unique 350-cubic-inch displacement V8.

Oldsmobile also introduced a 5. 7L ( 350cu-in, V-8 ) diesel engine option on its Delta 88 and 98 models in 1978 and a smaller 4. 3L ( 260 cu-in ) displacement diesel on the ' 79 Cutlass Supreme.

After the tremendous success of the early 1980s, things changed quickly for Oldsmobile, and by 1990 the brand had lost its place in the market, squeezed between other GM divisions, and with competition from new upscale import makes such as Acura and Lexus.

For 1995, Oldsmobile introduced the Aurora, which would be the inspiration for the design of its cars from the mid-1990s onward.

The announcement took place just two days after Oldsmobile unveiled what would be its last new model ever, the Bravada SUV-which became, somewhat ironically, another critical hit for the division.

Oldsmar celebrates its history every year with Oldsmar Days and Nights, where residents and visitors take part in parades, car shows ( featuring the Oldsmobile ) and carnival rides.

Musclecars magazine wrote: " he idea of putting a full-size V8 under the hood of an intermediate body and making it run like Jesse Owens in Berlin belongs to none other than Oldsmobile ... all-new ohv V8 ... Rocket engine quickly found its way into the lighter 76 series body, and in February 1949, the new 88 series was born.

Canadian Chevrolet / Oldsmobile dealers continued to sell a rebadged HB as the Envoy Epic through 1970 while Pontiac / Buick dealers kept selling the car under its real name.
