Originally known as the Seversky Aircraft Company, the company was responsible for the design and production of many important military aircraft, including its most famous product, World War II's P-47 Thunderbolt fighter, the F-84 Thunderjet and F-105 Thunderchief jet fighters, as well as the A-10 Thunderbolt II close-support aircraft.

On most World War II single-engined fighter aircraft ( and even one German heavy bomber design ) with sideways retracting main gear, the main gear that retracted into the wings was meant to be raked forward, towards the aircraft's nose in the " down " position for better ground handling, with a retracted position that placed the main wheels at some angle " behind " the main gear's attachment point to the airframe-this led to a complex geometry for setting up the angles for the retraction mechanism's axis of rotation, with some aircraft, like the P-47 Thunderbolt, even mandating that the main gear struts lengthen as they were extended down from the wings to assure proper ground clearance for its large four-bladed propeller.

The first major aircraft to merge from the new company was the P-47, using a new innovative design of Kartveli.

During the Western Allied invasion of Germany in April 1945, the airfield was seized by the United States Third Army, and used by the USAAF 354th Fighter Group which flew P-47 Thunderbolts from the aerodrome ( designated ALG R-82 ) from late April until the German capitulation on 7 May 1945.

Each column was protected by a standing patrol of three to four P-47 fighter-bombers as a combat air patrol ( CAP ).

Also, by that time, the Army Air Forces already had the superior P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightning fighter-bombers.

Galland again made a mistake ; he stopped to make sure his second victory was going to crash and he was hit by a USAAF P-47 Thunderbolt piloted by James Finnegan.

Bradley Field was used by the First Air Force primarily as a group training airfield for single-engine P-47 Thunderbolt fighter groups, which obtained their new aircraft from the Republic Aviation production plant on Long Island prior to their deployment to overseas combat theaters.

Any plane that attempted to break off contact by going into a dive would soon be overcome by the remarkable speed of the P-47.

Most P-47 Thunderbolt fighter groups were trained by I Fighter Command, along with P-39 / P-63 Airacobra groups ; C-47 Skytrain and later C-46 Commando groups by I Troop Carrier Command.

* Okie was the name of two P-47 fighter / bombers piloted by Maj. Quince L. Brown of the 84th Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group, during World War II.

Declared operational on 14 June, the airfield was designated as " A-3 ", it was used by the 368th Fighter Group which flew P-47 Thunderbolts until the end of August when the unit moved into Central France.

* March 2 – The Allied air forces make their largest attacks of the Anzio campaign, with 241 B-24 Liberators and 100 B-17 Flying Fortresses escorted by 113 P-38 Lightnings and 63 P-47 Thunderbolts dropping thousands of fragmentation bombs around Castello di Cisterna, Velletri, and Carroceto, Italy.

Hawker Typhoons and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts strafed German positions throughout the day and occasionally diced with the Luftwaffe over the battlefield.

During World War II the first projects resulted in the P-35 and P-47 one of the most effective US fighter aircraft, the Republic P-47.

The Republic P-47 was the successor of a line of airplanes derived from the Seversky P-35, the XP-41, P-43 Lancer and XP-44 Rocket.

The name Thunderjet was chosen to continue the Republic Aviation tradition started with the P-47 while emphasizing the new method of propulsion.
