PAVE PAWS phased array radar in Alaska

BMEWS & PAVE PAWS

On 1 July 1979, the 7th Missile Warning Squadron ( 7 MWS ) brought a Precision Acquisition Vehicle Entry Phased Array Warning System ( PAVE PAWS ) radar site to Beale, a Protection Level 1, 10-story structure that can detect possible attack by land-based and sea-launched ballistic missiles.

A large three-sided structure, the PAVE PAWS hosted two large AN / FPS-115 phased-array radar antennas.

Located in a cantonment area on the outskirts of Beale, the 7 MWS is now an Air Force Space Command ( AFSPC ) unit and it primarily uses its PAVE PAWS radar to detect submarine launched ballistic missiles and disintegrating spacecraft and space debris.

9th Security Forces Squadron provide security for the PAVE PAWS restricted area.

The PAVE PAWS radar station in Massachusetts has been investigated as a possible source for health concerns on Cape Cod.

The Air Force was sued in the United States District Court prior to the operation of PAVE PAWS on Cape Cod regarding the alleged insufficiency of the government's environmental studies.

According to a local news broadcast, " Two years ago, academy study concluded that PAVE PAWS was probably not to blame for elevated cancer rates in the general population.

" The Massachusetts state Department of Public Health conducted an investigation into specific incidences of the cancer on Cape Cod and their possible relationship to the PAVE PAWS radar station.

According to the father of one of patient, " All of affected children mentioned in the broadcast occupied places for a significant amount of time that received a high level of radiation from PAVE PAWS ," though there is currently no published research verifying the claim and the final report indicated that levels were not high.

In December 2007, the Massachusetts Department of Health released their report which concluded that it " appears unlikely that PAVE PAWS played a primary role in the incidence of Ewing family of tumors on Cape Cod.

A PAVE PAWS Early Warning Radar System built by Raytheon, based at Clear AFS, Alaska

The original system, used in helicopters ( The PAVE Low and PAVE Hawk ), stood for Precision Avionics Vectoring Equipment.
