There is not a widely accepted certification for software project managers, but many will hold the Project Management Professional ( PMP ) designation offered by the Project Management Institute, PRINCE2 or an advanced degree in project management, such as a MSPM or other graduate degree in technology management.

In the UK for example, the IT Infrastructure Library ( ITIL ), a government-developed ITSM framework, is often paired with the PRojects IN Controlled Environments ( PRINCE2 ) project methodology and Structured Systems Analysis and Design Method for systems development.

In project management it is a method comparable to PRINCE2 and describes methods for project management as well as methods for system development.

Typically, organizations that adopt an Enterprise Project Management way of working might set up a Project Management Office ( PMO )/ Enterprise Project Management Office ( EPMO, which is said to be more successful than a traditional PMO in addressing the priorities of the organization as its scope is enterprise-wide ), might select and adopt a Project Management Methodology like PRINCE2, PMBOK ( or create a proprietary method ) or follow the concepts of IPMA Competence Baseline as a foundation for development and certification of project managers and their knowledge, experience and behaviour.

Because of ISPL ’ s focus on procurement it is very suitable to be used with ITIL ( for IT Service Management ) and PRINCE2 ( for Project Management ).

PRINCE2 describes procedures to coordinate people and activities in a project, how to design and supervise the project, and what to do if the project has to be adjusted if it does not develop as planned.

PRINCE2 provides a common language for all participants in the project.

It includes many project management disciplines in common with PRINCE2, but has a broader focus to include the necessary integration of release management and both functional and non functional testing.

To be a complete project plan according to industry standards such as the PMBOK or PRINCE2, the project plan must also describe the execution, management and control of the project.

PRINCE2 provides a method for managing projects within a clearly defined framework.

The resulting architecture was designed to be fully compatible with ISO 9000 and PRINCE2, which were two major concerns for the group.

In some circumstances, there are possibilities to integrate practices from other methodologies, such as Rational Unified Process ( RUP ), Extreme Programming ( XP ), and PRINCE2, as complements to DSDM.

A concept of responsibility is in process of articulation and establishment.
