When Prometheus decides to steal the secret of fire from the gods, Zeus becomes infuriated and decides to punish humankind with an " evil thing for their delight " — Pandora, the first woman, who carried a jar ( usually described — incorrectly — as a box ) she was told to never open.

Pandora carried a jar with her, from which were released ( 91 – 92 ) " evils, harsh pain and troublesome diseases which give men death ".

In Greek mythology, Pandora ( ancient Greek,, derived from " all " and " gift ", thus " all-gifted " or " all-giving ") was allegedly the first woman, who was made out of clay.

According to the myth, Pandora opened a jar ( pithos ), in modern accounts sometimes mistranslated as " Pandora's box " ( see below ), releasing all the evils of mankind — although the particular evils, aside from plagues and diseases, are not specified in detail by Hesiod — leaving only Hope inside once she had closed it again.

The more famous version of the Pandora myth comes from another of Hesiod's poems, Works and Days.

An independent Pandora tradition that does not square with any of the literary sources is the tradition in the visual repertory of Attic red-figure vase-painters, which sometimes supplements, sometimes ignores, the written testimony ; in these representations the upper part of Pandora is visible rising from the earth, " a chthonic goddess like Gaia herself.

M. L. West writes that the story of Pandora and her jar is from a pre-Hesiodic myth, and that this explains the confusion and problems with Hesiod's version and its inconclusiveness.

He remarks that there is a curious correlation between Pandora being made out of earth in Hesiod's story, to what is in the Bibliotheca that Prometheus created man from water and earth.

On a fifth century amphora in the Ashmolean Museum ( her fig. 71 ) the half-figure of Pandora emerges from the ground, her arms upraised in the epiphany gesture, to greet Epimetheus.

A winged ker with a fillet hovers overhead: " Pandora rises from the earth ; she is the Earth, giver of all gifts ," Harrison observes.

Eve was created to help Adam, Pandora to bring punishment to the men who benefited from the crime ( Prometheus having been punished separately ).

The more famous version of the Pandora myth comes from one of Hesiod's poems, Works and Days.

Complicating this is the escape of an ancient evil called Pandora from the Matrix in the paradoxical form of Romana's first incarnation ( played once again by Mary Tamm ).

The libretto was adapted by Berg himself from Frank Wedekind's plays Erdgeist ( Earth Spirit, 1895 ) and Die Büchse der Pandora ( Pandora's Box, 1904 ).

After the loss of his salary, a subscription was set on foot by the Earl of Buchan to relieve him from his difficulties, and to settle him in a larger house to finish his picture of Pandora.

According to Hesiod, who related the tale twice ( Theogony, 527ff ; Works and Days 57ff ), Epimetheus was the one who accepted the gift of Pandora from the gods.

In late 1985 it was officially named after Pandora from Greek mythology.

Pandora cannot resist peeking into the jar, and by opening it all evil is unleashed into the world — labour, sickness, old age, and death.

Eve is the Hebrew version of the Greek Pandora.

In Hesiod, the story of Prometheus ( and, by extension, of Pandora ) serves to reinforce the theodicy of Zeus: he is a wise and just ruler of the universe, while Prometheus is to blame for humanity's unenviable existence.

In the mystical theories of the Orphics and the Platonists, Kore is described as the all-pervading goddess of nature who both produces and destroys everything and she is therefore mentioned along or identified with other mystic divinities such as Isis, Rhea, Ge, Hestia, Pandora, Artemis, and Hecate.

The myth of Pandora is ancient, appears in several distinct Greek versions, and has been interpreted in many ways.

In the seventh century BC, Hesiod, both in his Theogony ( briefly, without naming Pandora outright, line 570 ) and in Works and Days, gives the earliest literary version of the Pandora story ; however, there is an older mention of jars or urns containing blessings and evils bestowed upon mankind in Homer's Iliad:

This woman goes unnamed in the Theogony, but is presumably Pandora, whose myth Hesiod revisited in Works and Days.

Archaic and Classic Greek literature seem to make no further mention of Pandora, though Sophocles wrote a satyr play Pandora, or The Hammerers of which virtually nothing is known.

The 15th-century monk Annio da Viterbo credited a manuscript he claimed to have found to the Chaldean historian of the 3rd century BC, Berossus, where " Pandora " was also named as a daughter-in-law of Noah ; this attempt to conjoin pagan and scriptural narrative is recognized as a forgery.

" Sometimes, but not always, she is labeled Pandora.

Numerous synonyms were used to make oblique reference to the stone, such as " white stone " ( calculus albus, identified with the calculus candidus of Revelation 2: 17 which was taken as a symbol of the glory of heaven ), vitriol ( as expressed in the backronym Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem ), also lapis noster, lapis occultus, in water at the box, and numerous oblique, mystical or mythological references such as Adam, Aer, Animal, Alkahest, Antidotus, Antimonium, Aqua benedicta, Aqua volans per aeram, Arcanum, Atramentum, Autumnus, Basilicus, Brutorum cor, Bufo, Capillus, Capistrum auri, Carbones, Cerberus, Chaos, Cinis cineris, Crocus, Dominus philosophorum, Divine quintessence, Draco elixir, Filius ignis, Fimus, Folium, Frater, Granum, Granum frumenti, Haematites, Hepar, Herba, Herbalis, Lac, Melancholia, Ovum philosophorum, Panacea salutifera, Pandora, Phoenix, Philosophic mercury, Pyrites, Radices arboris solares, Regina, Rex regum, Sal metallorum, Salvator terrenus, Talcum, Thesaurus, Ventus hermetis.

The title is a reference to Pandora of Greek mythology, who upon opening a box given to her by the gods released all evils into the world, leaving only hope behind.
