Richard Barnfield, Dowland's contemporary, refers to the lutenist in poem VIII of The Passionate Pilgrim ( 1598 ):

( The disputed miscellany The Passionate Pilgrim was only printed in octavo: twice, apparently, in 1599, with an O3 in 1612, all by William Jaggard.

The elder Jaggard has seemed an odd choice to many commentators, given his problematical relationship with the Shakespeare canon: Jaggard issued the suspect collection The Passionate Pilgrim in 1599 and 1612, and in 1619 printed the so-called False Folio, ten pirated or spurious Shakespearean plays, some with false dates and title pages.

Among his other works were The Passionate Pilgrim ( 1858 ), a volume of selections from Robert Herrick entitled Chrysomela ( 1877 ), a memoir of Arthur Hugh Clough ( 1862 ) and a critical essay on Sir Walter Scott ( 1866 ) prefixed to an edition of his poems.

It is in the " Epistle to the Printer " in this 1612 work that Heywood writes about William Jaggard's appropriation of two of Heywood's poems for the same year's edition of The Passionate Pilgrim.

" is also very similar to that expressed in the poem " Whenas thine eye ", published as the work of Shakespeare in the 1599 collection The Passionate Pilgrim, and which is in the same stanza form as Willobie's poem.

The collection published as The Passionate Pilgrim contains genuine poems by Shakespeare along with poems known to have been written by other authors, along with some of unknown authorship.

William Jaggard has seemed an odd choice by the King's Men, since he had published the questionable collection The Passionate Pilgrim as Shakespeare's, and in 1619 had printed new editions of ten Shakespearean quartos to which he did not have clear rights, some with false dates and title pages ( the False Folio affair ).

The Passionate Pilgrim ( 1599 ) is an anthology of 20 poems collected and published by William Jaggard that were attributed to " W. Shakespeare " on the title page, only five of which are accepted by present-day scholars as authentically Shakespearean.

Jaggard issued an expanded edition of The Passionate Pilgrim in 1612, containing additional poems on the theme of Helen of Troy, announced on the title page (" Whereunto is newly added two Love Epistles, the first from Paris to Hellen, and Hellen's answere back again to Paris ").

All the early editions of The Passionate Pilgrim are in octavo format.

The poems in The Passionate Pilgrim were reprinted in John Benson's 1640 edition of Shakespeare's Poems, along with the Sonnets, A Lover's Complaint, The Phoenix and the Turtle, and other pieces.
