The historic Pelham Picture House

Schley County Rep. B. D. Pelham will offer a resolution Monday in the House to rescind the body's action of Friday in voting itself a $10 per day increase in expense allowances.

While emphasizing that technical details were not fully worked out, Pelham said his resolution would seek to set aside the privilege resolution which the House voted through 87-31.

Pelham House dates back to the sixteenth century and features architecture of all subsequent eras and a private landscaped garden facing the Downs.

However the Liberal Whig MP Charles Pelham Villiers proposed motions for repeal in the House of Commons annually from 1837 to 1845.

For the first year of his premiership, real power was held by the Secretary of State for the Northern Department, Lord Carteret, who headed the Carteret Ministry ( Pelham was First Lord of the Treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons ).

In 1742 a union of parties resulted in the formation of an administration in which Pelham became Prime Minister the following year, with the offices of First Lord of the Treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons.

Pelham appointed him Master of the Horse, a post he held until 1755 and which necessitated his leaving the House of Commons for the House of Lords by writ of acceleration as Baron Cavendish and joining the Privy Council.

Charles Pelham Villiers ( 3 January 1802 – 16 January 1898 ) was a British lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1835 to 1898, making him the longest-serving Member of Parliament ( MP ).

The Pelham family descends from Thomas Pelham of Laughton, Sussex, who represented Lewes and Sussex in the House of Commons.

In 1801, during his father's lifetime, he was summoned to the House of Lords through a writ of acceleration in his father's junior title of Baron Pelham of Stanmer.

The Pelham family created the present-day Stanmer Park and built Stanmer House.

Their grandson Charles Anderson assumed the additional surname of Pelham and represented Beverley and Lincolnshire in the House of Commons.

Caistor Yarborough School in Caistor, Lincolnshire was named in memorial to John Edward Pelham, 7th Earl of Yarborough and is located less than a mile away from the Brocklesby House estate.

Lord Hampden married Eliza ( 1818-8 March 1899, Pelham House, Lewes ), daughter of General Robert Ellice by his wife Eliza, illegitimate daughter of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey by Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, in 1838.

He attended school at Pelham House, Sandgate, and Harrow School.

Walpole was instead succeeded as Prime Minister by Lord Wilmington, though the real power in the new government was divided between Lord Carteret and the Pelham brothers ( Henry and Thomas, Duke of Newcastle ).

To force the matter, the Pelham brothers had to resign on the question whether he should be admitted or not, and it was only after all other arrangements had proved impracticable, that they were reinstated with Pitt appointed as Vice Treasurer of Ireland in February 1746.

Pitt ostentatiously made this clear to everyone, although he was in fact following what Henry Pelham had done when he had held the post between 1730 and 1743.

In 1754, Henry Pelham died suddenly, and was succeeded as Prime Minister by his brother, the Duke of Newcastle.

T. Pelham Dale SSC, who was prosecuted and imprisoned for ritualist practices in 1876 and 1880, and thus regarded as a martyr by Anglo-Catholics, was the parish priest from 1881-1892 ; his grave can be seen under the trees on the eastern side of the churchyard.

The leader of the Whigs was Robert Walpole, who maintained control of the government in the period 1721 – 1742 ; his protégé was Henry Pelham ( 1743 – 54 ).

At the time it also included present day Bronx County, which constituted the original Town of Westchester ( the center of which was around the area today known as Westchester Square, in the Bronx ) and portions of Yonkers, Eastchester, and Pelham.

After the battles of Pelham and White Plains in 1776, the main American headquarters was at Continental Village, north of Peekskill.

In 1800, the first commercial toll road, the Westchester Turnpike, which ran through Pelham and New Rochelle, was chartered.

In 1874, the western portion of the present Bronx County, consisting of the then towns of Kingsbridge, West Farms, and Morrisania, was transferred to New York County, and in 1895 the remainder of the present Bronx County, consisting of the Town of Westchester and portions of the towns of Eastchester and Pelham, was transferred to New York County.

Although the latter was engraved by Revere and he included the inscription, " Engraved, Printed, & Sold by Paul Revere Boston ", it was modeled on a drawing by Henry Pelham, and Revere's engraving of the drawing was colored by a third man and printed by a fourth.

The Ellesmere Ice Shelf was documented by the British Arctic Expedition of 1875 – 76, in which Lieutenant Pelham Aldrich's party went from Cape Sheridan () west to Cape Alert (), including the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf.

The second largest public park in the city of New York ( after Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx ), it was created as the site of the 1939 / 1940 New York World's Fair and also hosted the 1964 / 1965 New York World's Fair.

Thomas Pelham Dale SSC, Anglo-Catholic clergyman was prosecuted for Ritualist practices in the 1870s.

The Pelham Parks and Recreation department has recently added two non-official sized baseball fields to the southwest corner of the park.

The land remaining from the disincorporated towns was added to surrounding municipalities, including Belchertown, Pelham, New Salem, Petersham, Hardwick and Ware.

Holding lights have been added in two places along the uptown platform, so that trains can be kept at this station when the two tracks at the Pelham Bay Park terminal are occupied.

In 1892, the townships of Pelham and Gainsborough were added to the riding.
