Allegory or The Triumph of Justice ( 1598 ), German title: " Sieg der Wahrheit unter dem Schutze der Gerechtigkeit "- Oil on copper, 56 x 47 cm Alte Pinakothek, Munich Hans von Aachen began painting in Germany as a pupil of the Flemish master E. Jerrigh.

In 2010, a show of 80 oil works on paper, many never exhibited before, was mounted by the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, later travelling to other venues, including Centre Pompidou, Paris, and The Morgan Library & Museum, New York.

The name ( old Pinakothek ) alludes to the time period covered by the art — the Neue Pinakothek covers 19th century art and the recently opened Pinakothek der Moderne exhibits modern art, all galleries are part of Munich's " Kunstareal " ( the " art area ").

In 2002, the National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Arts moved into the Pinakothek der Moderne.

In 2010, Rauch had his first museum retrospective, which was jointly held at the Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig in Leipizig, Germany, and the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany.

Designed by German architect Stephan Braunfels, the Pinakothek der Moderne was inaugurated in September 2002 after seven years of construction.

Before the opening of the Pinakothek der Moderne, art of the 20th century was largely relegated to the Haus der Kunst, or occasional contemporary exhibits in the Lenbachhaus.

Today, the Pinakothek unifies the " Sammlung Moderne Kunst " ( National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Arts, which is under supervision of the Bavarian State Painting Collections ), the " Staatliche Graphische Sammlung " ( National Collection of Works on Paper ), the " Neue Sammlung " (' New Collection ': National Museum for Design and Applied Arts ) with the " Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universität " ( Munich Technical University's Museum of Architecture ), in one building and is deemed one of the most important and popular museums of modern art in Europe.

In the Brussels gallery are " The Port of Antwerp ," " Coast near Ostend ," and a " Calm on the Scheldt "; in the Antwerp museum, " The Meuse at Dordrecht "; in the Pinakothek at Munich, " The Open North Sea "; in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, " The Festival of the Freedom of the Scheldt at Antwerp in 1863 "; in the palace of the king of the Belgians, " Arrival of Queen Victoria at Ostend in 1857 "; in the Bruges academy, " Port of Feirugudo, Portugal.

The Scenes from the Passion of Christ in the Galleria Sabauda of Turin and the Advent and Triumph of Christ in the Pinakothek of Munich, are illustrations of the habit in Flanders art of representing a cycle of subjects on the different planes of a single picture, where a wide expanse of ground is covered with incidents from the Passion in the form common to the action of sacred plays.

Reading the Will, a commission from the king of Bavaria, now in the New Pinakothek at Munich, was completed in 1820 ; and two years later the great picture of Chelsea Pensioners Reading the Gazette of the Battle of Waterloo, commissioned by the Duke of Wellington in 1816, at a cost of 1200 guineas, was exhibited at the Royal Academy.

The city's most important work of art, the Hofer altar, dates from about 1465 and is exhibited in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich today.

Since the 1960s the Pinakothek has filled some of these gaps: for example, a deficit of 18th century paintings was addressed by the integration into the collection of works loaned from two Bavarian banks.

The Neue Pinakothek is especially famous for its comprehensive collection of paintings of Impressionism from Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh and many others.

Finally it was Otto Jahn's 1854 catalogue Vasensammlung of the Pinakothek, Munich, that set the standard for the scientific description of Greek pottery, recording the shapes and inscriptions with a previously unseen fastidousness.
