This was one of the many changes initiated by new head coach Doug Dickey, who also added the " T " logo to the football helmet and initiated the tradition of the team running onto the field through the " Power T " formed by The Pride of the Southland Marching Band, and moved the Tennessee bench from the east side line to the west side line.

In U. S. college athletics, " Rocky Top " is associated with the Tennessee Volunteers of the University of Tennessee, whose Pride of the Southland Band has played a marching band version of the song at the school's sporting events since the early 1970s.

In 1972, the University of Tennessee's Pride of the Southland Band first played the song as part of one of its drills, the idea and arrangement being primarily the work of band arranger Barry MacDonald.

The Pride of the Southland Band is the official name of the University of Tennessee's marching band.

The name, " Pride of the Southland ", was a " committee " decision of the band members, themselves, on morning of October 15, 1949, as they stood around on sidelines at Legion Field in Birmingham awaiting to practice for the afternoon game.

That afternoon as the band came out on field and paused for introduction, for the first time was heerd over loud speaker by 44, 000 fans present and the radio listeners, " Presenting The University of Tennessee's Pride of the Southland Band under the direction of ' Major ' Walter M. Ryba ," It was generally felt that Ryba did not know ahead of time that he was receiving a " commission ".

The oldest tradition of the Pride of the Southland comes at the end of every home halftime show where the Pride plays Spirit of the Hill and forms an interlocking UT with the year 1794 or, more recently, on one side of the field a U and on the other side a T, on the field.

The Pride of the Southland has represented the state of Tennessee for each Presidential Inauguration for the past 12 parades.

These include The University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Band, and The Middle Tennessee State University Band of Blue.

" The 300 + member SDSU Marching Band, " The Pride of the Dakotas ", given the special name the Millennium Band in 2000 by the South Dakota State Legislature, has marched in the 1981 and 1997 Presidential Inaugural Parades in Washington, D. C .; A Capital Fourth in 2000 in Washington DC which was broadcast on PBS ; the 2003 and 2008 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California making them the second collegiate band in the history of the Rose Bowl to be invited to march twice when their team was not competing ; and the Korean War Monument Dedication at the state's capital Pierre in 2004, in the company of two other college bands and 60-some high school bands from across the state.

The Pride of Piedmont Marching Band has won Class Championships at the Oklahoma Bandmasters ' Association Championships in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.

In 2003, 2007, and 2009 the Marching Green Pride band of Azle directed by Dr. Ross Grant advanced to the State Marching competition in San Antonio.

In November 2011, the Marching Green Pride, under the direction of Shawn Murphy, placed 18th out of 244 4A marching bands in the state of Texas.

The Marching Wildcats ( The Pride ) of Bethune-Cookman create the " BCU " formation while playing before a packed Citrus Bowl Stadium at the Florida Classic. The Marching Wildcats are a 325 member unit that includes instrumentalists, the Sophisticat Flag Corps and the 14 Karat Gold dancers.

Known as " The Pride ," the band is under the direction of a Bethune-Cookman alumnus and former Marching Wildcat, Donovan Wells.

The Big Orange Pride or BOP is Northrop High School's Marching Band.

Chandler High School Chorale was the first American high school to be invited to perform at the 2005 Jilin College of the Arts Summer Music Festival in Changchun, People's Republic of China, and not only once, but twice to perform at the noble Carnegie Hall for a festival, while Chandler High School's Wolf Pack Pride Marching Band competed in the 2005-2006 Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship, placing fifth.

On January 1, 2011, the band's song, " You ," from their 2003 album, Rump Shaker, was performed by the Western Carolina University Pride of the Mountains Marching Band in the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.

The West Virginia University Mountaineer Marching Band, known as the Pride of West Virginia, has performed an arrangement of the song during Mountaineer football games since 1973.

When the band marches out of Memorial Stadium's North Tunnel for football pre-games, it is referred to as " The Pacesetter of College Marching Bands, the Pride of California ".

In 2009, the ' Marching Tiger Pride ' earned the rank of 8th place out of ten bands in the state of Arizona.

The Tiger Marching Pride also was selected to go to State Championships, where they placed 9th in the state.

The World Renowned " Pride of Mississippi " Marching Band now sits in the new expansion in the south end zone.

Several characters are based on real country music figures: Henry Gibson's Haven Hamilton is a composite of Roy Acuff, Hank Snow, and Porter Wagoner ; Ronee Blakely's Barbara Jean is based on Loretta Lynn ; the black country singer Tommy Brown ( played by Timothy Brown ) is based on Charley Pride ; and the feuding folk trio is based on Peter, Paul and Mary ; within the trio, the married couple of Bill and Mary were inspired by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, who later became Starland Vocal Band .< ref >

The Pride Band is the university's marching band.

In December 2005 the Pride Band traveled to London, England to be the honor band in the London New Year's Day parade, and was the Honor Band in the 2009 McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade in Chicago, Illinois.
