It was one of the original four districts created by Oregon's first Provisional Legislature, along with Twality ( later Washington ), Clackamas, and Champooick ( later Marion ) counties.

The Oregon Provisional Legislature created Polk County from Yamhill District on December 22, 1845, granting to it the entire southwestern portion of present day Oregon to the California border.

On December 28, 1847 the Provisional Legislature created Linn County from the southern portion of Champoeg ( later Marion ) County.

Originally named Clackamas District, it was one of the four original Oregon districts created by Oregon's Provisional Legislature on July 5, 1843 along with Twality ( later Washington ), Champooick ( later Marion ), and Yamhill.

When Linn County was created from the southern portion of Champoeg County on December 28, 1847, the Provisional Legislature named Calapooia as the county seat.

Later he served in the Provisional Legislature of Oregon before being selected as the United States Marshal for the Oregon Territory.

The Vargas Era comprises three successive phases: the period of the Provisional Government ( 1930 – 1934 ), when Vargas governed by decree as Head of the Provisional Government ; the period of the Constitution of 1934 ( when, in the wake of the adoption of a new Constitution by the Constituent Assembly of 1933 – 34, Vargas – elected by the Constituent Assembly under the transitional provisions of the Constitution – governed as President, alongside a democratically elected Legislature ); and the Estado Novo period ( 1937 – 1945 ), that begins when, in order to perpetuate his rule, Vargas imposes a new, authoritarian Constitution in a coup d ' etát, and shuts down Congress, assuming dictatorial powers.

Then in 1848 he was elected to the Provisional Legislature from Tuality District where he served with fellow Hillsboro resident David Hill.

The Provisional Legislature of Oregon and Governor George Abernethy called for " immediate and prompt action ," and authorized the raising of companies of volunteers to go to war, if necessary, against the Cayuse Tribe.

Later he served in the Provisional Legislature of Oregon before being selected as the United States Marshal for the Oregon Territory.

In 1846, the Oregon Provisional Legislature allowed the Applegates and others to attempt to find a more southerly route to Oregon.

This arrangement was announced on July 5, 1843, after three months of study by the Provisional Legislature at Champoeg.

The Provisional Legislature at Champoeg then gave the approval for the Oregon Exchange Company to mint currency.

It was built in 1846 by Sam Barlow and Philip Foster, with authorization of the Provisional Legislature of Oregon, and served as the last overland segment of the Oregon Trail.

That autumn, Barlow considered the route over the mountains and petitioned the Provisional Legislature of Oregon for permission to build a road on December 9, 1845, claiming that his estimated cost of $ 4000 was lower than that of others familiar with the route.

The Provisional Legislature of Oregon in 1847 immediately raised companies of volunteers to go to war, if necessary, against the Cayuse, and, to the discontent of some of the militia leaders, also sent a peace commission.
