They first travel to the Puppeteer home world, where they learn that the expedition's goal is to explore a ringworld: an artificial ring about one million miles wide and approximately the diameter of Earth's orbit ( which makes it about 600 million miles in circumference ), encircling a Sol-type star.

The Puppeteer voice range is far greater than the human one, but for speaking to humans they adopt the tone of a very seductive female.

They continue their journey during which Nessus is forced to reveal some Puppeteer secrets: they have performed indirect " breeding experiments " on both humans ( breeding for luck ) and kzin ( breeding for less aggressiveness ).

Finally, it gives rules for non-human, Kzin or Puppeteer, player characters, and a glossary.

According to the Niven story The Soft Weapon, Pierson was a crewman aboard a spaceship at a time when there was a camp revival of the ancient Time for Beany TV show featuring Cecil the Sea-Sick Sea Serpent, an animated character based on a hand puppet ; Pierson accordingly described the alien he had met as a Puppeteer, given some resemblance of the head and neck with Cecil.

This, together with a total lack of contraceptives ( except major surgery ) for their species, is responsible for extreme crowding: the Puppeteer homeworld has a population of over four trillion, and four farming worlds are dedicated entirely to supplying the population with food.

The cowardice is thought in Puppeteer society to originate with the Puppeteer instinct for turning one's back on danger.

In Ringworld, Nessus, a Puppeteer, explains how his race's cowardice is partly a result of a science experiment ( the details of which are not given ) that proves the Puppeteers have nothing equivalent to an immortal soul, and therefore death is, for their species, absolute and eternal.

After the Puppeteer Exodus ( see below ), it is rumored that General Products is a front for Gregory Pelton, a character in the short story " Flatlander ".

Blackmail is not immoral to a Puppeteer and Puppeteers have an established code of conduct surrounding the practice, making it perfectly safe for both the blackmailer and the victim, including that the blackmailer must turn over all their evidence against the victim and submit to a partial memory wipe, so they cannot betray the blackmail deal.

The Puppeteers also use more personal manipulation ; for instance, Puppeteers who have dealt with human males have utilized a voice that sounds like that of a seductive human female, and the Puppeteer Nessus utilized an implanted tasp, a device which could stimulate the pleasure center of the brain, thus allowing him to subliminally condition those he dealt with.

This news prompts the Puppeteer Exodus, where the Fleet of Worlds flee the galaxy at just under light speed for the Magellanic Clouds, in the hope that by the time the explosion reaches the Fleet of Worlds, the Puppeteers will have found a way to protect their civilization.

Nessus is a male ( of the second type, his species has three sexes ) character in Larry Niven's Known Space universe, of the species Pierson's Puppeteer, an herbivorous species noted for two heads whose mouths act as capable hands.

Taking it for granted that he would eventually be discovered in Puppeteer regions of space, he agrees to let Nessus alter his memory and return him to Known Space.

After one of his booth transfers gets diverted to a hotel room, he accepts an offer to go on an expedition with three other members — two aliens ( a Pierson's Puppeteer named Nessus, and a catlike Kzin called Speaker-to-Animals ) and Teela Brown, a human female supposedly bred for luck.

Louis then returns to the Ringworld looking for matter conversion technology for another Pierson's Puppeteer, a deposed leader ( the " Hindmost ").

Teela was a member of the crew recruited by Puppeteer Nessus for an expedition to the Ringworld.

Beowulf Shaeffer, a native of the planet We Made It and unemployed for the last eight months due to a stock market crash, is contracted by a Pierson's Puppeteer, the Regional President of General Products on We Made It, to pilot a General Products-hulled starship, in a close approach about neutron star BVS-1.

After returning to We Made It, Shaeffer is hospitalized ( he has received a sunburn by starlight blue-shifted into the ultraviolet ) for observation at the Puppeteer ’ s insistence.

While explaining tidal forces to the Puppeteer, Schaeffer realizes the alien had no knowledge of tides, something that would be elementary for a sentient species living on a world with a moon.

When Schaeffer mentions that he can tell reporters the fact that the Puppeteer's world has no moon, the Puppeteer agrees to give Shaeffer a million stars ( a fortune in galactic currency ) in return for his silence.

Each of these Kzinti defeats eliminated the most aggressive individuals from the Kzinti gene pool and thus made the Kzinti more " manageable " from a Puppeteer point of view.

Their commercial empire directly and indirectly controls events throughout Known Space and beyond, and Puppeteer plots are behind many of the larger events in Known Space.

The name " Puppeteer " is purportedly derived from the twin " heads " ( not enclosing brains ) which perform as both mouths and hands, which strongly resemble sock puppets.

It is also suggested that the " Puppeteer " name may derive from their social tendency to be very manipulative.

The Puppeteer firm, General Products, produces an invulnerable starship hull, known simply as a General Products Hull.
