Hainan is located in the South China Sea, separated from Guangdong's Leizhou Peninsula to the north by the shallow and narrow Qiongzhou Strait.

The name " Hainan " ( 海南 ) describes its location south of the Qiongzhou Strait, while the Leizhou Peninsula is also called Haibei ( 海北 ) as it is located north of the strait.

Hainan, separated by the Qiongzhou Strait ( 瓊州海峽 ) from the Leizhou Peninsula ( 雷州半島 ) of Guangdong, is the largest island administered by the People's Republic of China.
