The pope wanted to find a location which would have been far away from the humidity and stench coming from the river Tiber and the unhealthy conditions of the Lateran Palace, therefore the Quirinal hill was one of the most suitable places in Rome.

After the Avignon Papacy the church administration moved to Vatican Hill and the papal palace was ( until 1871 ) the Quirinal Palace, upon the Quirinal Hill.

Pope Pius, stripped of his temporal power retreated into the Vatican Palace and declared himself the " prisoner in the Vatican ", while the King of Piedmont, now proclaimed King of Italy, was installed in the former papal residence, the Quirinal Palace.

On 18 May 1941, a ceremony took place at the Quirinal Palace to which Ante Pavelić, the leader of the fascist Ustaše movement that had assumed power in Croatia in April 1941 after the invasion of Yugoslavia, led a delegation of Croats requesting that Italy's King Victor Emmanuel III name a member of the House of Savoy as king of Croatia.

On his return to Rome he purchased and began laying out in great splendour the famous gardens on the Quirinal known as the Horti Sallustiani or Gardens of Sallust.

The Constitutional Court of Italy in Palazzo della Consulta, is among the Quirinal Hill government buildings in Rome.

The temple built on Quirinal Hill and dedicated to Serapis was, by most surviving accounts, the most sumptuous and architectonically ambitious of those built on the hill ; its remains are still visible between Palazzo Colonna and the Pontifical Gregorian University.

In the late 1570s or early 1580s Gentileschi moved to Rome, and was associated with the landscape-painter Agostino Tassi, executing the figures for the landscape backgrounds of this artist in the Palazzo Rospigliosi, and it is said in the great hall of the Quirinal Palace, although by some authorities the figures in the last-named building are ascribed to Giovanni Lanfranco.

The family also lends its name to the Palazzo Aldobrandini on the Quirinal Hill.

Antonio and Guido Reni collaborated in the decoration of the Cappella dell ’ Annunciata in the Palazzo Quirinal, painting a frieze of the Stanza del Diluvio.

In addition, he worked on the Quirinal Palace, the Papal palace in Castel Gandolfo and the Palazzo Barberini and for the Barberini Pope Urban VIII ( 1628 and completed 1633 ; much remodeled since ).

After his uncle ’ s passing he received commissions in Rome from Cardinal Tonti and Cardinal Peretti-Montalto, including the ‘’ Stanza del Diluvio ’’ in the Quirinal Palace, and major altarpieces like Berlin ‘’ Madonna and Child with Saints and Galleria Corsini ‘’ Nativity ’’.

He painted the Battle of Joshua in the Gallery of the Quirinal Palace, the Crucifixion of St Andrew in Sant ' Andrea al Quirinale, various works for the Jesuits, some also in co-operation with his brother.
