In 2022, all of the remaining Zentraedi on Earth join the Robotech Expeditionary Force ( REF ) on a mission into deep space to find the Robotech Masters and prevent another war on Earth.

By 2023, the only person on Earth with any Zentraedi blood is Dana Sterling, who was judged as too scientifically valuable to join her parents on the REF mission.

The REF was unable to send significant aid back to Earth due to its war with the Invid.

The REF learns that Earth has fallen to the Invid when a group of survivors from the Southern Cross refugees who escaped from Earth after acquiring one of the few remaining operational spacecraft.

The REF had faced the Invid before but it is soon realized that the Invid have been evolving on Earth and consequently, their military abilities and strength has grown considerably.

Edwards is eventually defeated by Admiral Rick Hunter and Captain Vince Grant, and the REF turns their attention to freeing Earth from the Invid.

In July 2044, the REF prepares for one final assault on Earth to dislodge the Invid.

The SDF-3, the massive flagship of the REF fleet, was supposed to lead the attack on Earth but it is delayed as it conducts a test of one of the Neutron-S missiles in the remote omicron sector.

In addition, to the massive space fleet, resistance forces on Earth, aided by REF commando units that are dropped prior to the assault, are to attack and attempt to destroy Reflex Point on the ground if the spacefleet proves unsuccessful.

The fighters are to remain near Earth, which will be vulnerable while the REF rebuilds.

As a result, there is little Earth can do to assist the REF.

With the Invid gone, the REF expects that their next challenge will be rebuilding Earth, which has been devastated by the 13-year Invid occupation.

The Haydonites original plan was that the REF, unaware of the true power of the Neutron S missiles considered for use during the assault in 2044, would use them on Earth.

The resulting black hole that would have been created would have destroyed the Earth, the Invid, the REF fleet, and Moon Base ALuCE.

When the Robotech Expeditionary Force ( REF ) left Earth in December 2022, most of those who opposed these developments chose to go with the REF.

Fortunately, the Robotech Expeditionary Force ( REF ) had long been self sufficient with the help of other recently established extraterrestrial settlements, and was only minimally hampered by the loss of Earth.

Unfortunately, events in deep space that kept the REF from sending aid during the Second Robotech War continued to plague them and kept them from turning their full attention to reclaiming Earth for another decade.

In 2038, the 10th Mars division of the REF launched an assault against the Invid forces on Earth.

Lancer served as a courier and spy for resistance forces that sought to not only harass the Invid while biding their time until, it was hoped, Admiral Rick Hunter would return with the full strength of the REF to liberate Earth.

In 2043 and again in 2044, attempts by the REF to gain footholds on Earth in preparation for an invasion also met with disaster.

Some resistance forces began to wonder if the REF would ever be able to free Earth from its 13-year nightmare.

In 2043, as chronicled in Robotech: Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles the Regent is soon joined by General T. R. Edwards, who betrays the REF to gain power.

At the end of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, the situation of the REF is dire.

It is hoped by fans that the fate of the SDF-3 and the REF will be revealed in a future Robotech Installment.

Initially, the final battle of the Third Robotech War proceeded well for the REF.

The retreat of the Invid ended the Third Robotech War, though it also marked the start of the Shadow Chronicles, the fourth Robotech war between the REF and their former allies, the Haydonites who betrayed and manipulated the REF during the war with the Invid and whom now, with the Invid gone, launch their own attack to destroy the REF and Earth.

At the end of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, the situation of the REF is dire.
