These boats were used to support the college's sailing activities and also to fulfil the college's responsibility as an inshore lifeboat station for the RNLI – a responsibility it still discharges to this day.

Following the withdrawal of the RNLI lifeboat, Port William raised the necessary funds and volunteers to buy and staff an Inshore Rescue Boat in about 1982, which still operates today, covering Luce Bay, Wigtown Bay and the area between South West Scotland and the Isle of Man.

The RNLI operates two lifeboats from Falmouth: Richard Cox Scott, a Severn Class all weather boat, and Eve Park, an Atlantic 75 inshore lifeboat.

The Oddfellows hall on the Lifeboat Plain, built in 1867, was the original RNLI Lifeboat station and a gathering place for fishermen and boat builders, and has over the years been used as a Craft centre, used to exhibit a model railway, and to display a model village.

A plaque, in memory of the 47 lives lost on the S. S. Santampa, capsized and wrecked in heavy seas, and the Mumbles RNLI life boat which attempted rescue on April 23, 1947, is visible at low tide.

At the end of the spit are Calshot Castle ( built by King Henry VIII ), an RNLI lifeboat, an NCI station, several slipways, a former Royal Navy and Royal Air Force flying boat station and Calshot Activities Centre.

The following year a new boat, the James Chisholm ( RNLI number 403 ), was installed.

The Alderney lifeboat station was established in 1869, closed in 1884 and re-established in 1985 by the RNLI, which serves Alderney with its all-weather Trent class lifeboat Roy Barker I.
