At the age of 17 Collins was signed to the J. Arthur Rank Film Company, a British film studio.

In 1935, millionaire Methodist and flour magnate J. Arthur Rank created a partnership with Boot and together transformed the estate into a film studio.

Having first created a film production company and having made a movie at another studio, Rank, Lady Yule and John Corfield began talking to Charles Boot who had recently bought the estate of Heatherden Hall at Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, for the purpose of turning it into a movie studio that would rival those in Hollywood, California.

After the departure of Balcon to the British arm of MGM, the Rank Organisation took an interest in Gainsborough and the studio made such popular films as Oh, Mr Porter!

Unhappy with the performance of the studio, Rank closed it down in early 1951.

Financed by the Rank Organisation at a time of rationing and shortages of materials in the period immediately after World War II, it was filmed in the shell of " Sound City Shepperton ," which had been made available as a film studio after being requisitioned during the war as a factory for aircraft parts.

J. Arthur Rank spent large sums of money for American songwriters ( Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke ), musicians ( Ted Heath and his orchestra ), and costumes by the legendary designer Orry-Kelly, while at the same time re-equipping the studio from the ground up.
