Following the formation of baseball's first professional organization, the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, which became known as the National Association, the Association, or NA, in 1871, Spalding joined the Boston Red Stockings ( precursor club to the modern Atlanta Braves ) and was highly successful ; winning 206 games ( and losing only 53 ) as a pitcher and batting. 323 as a hitter.

The first and most prominent professional clubs of the NABBP era were the Cincinnati Red Stockings in Ohio, which lasted only two years.

Businessman Iver Whitney Adams then courted manager Harry Wright and founded the " Boston Red Stockings "

The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first to so declare themselves as openly professional, and were easily the most aggressive in recruiting the best available players.

The now all professional Chicago White Stockings, financed by businessman William Hulbert, became a charter member of the league along with the Red Stockings, who had dissolved and moved to Boston.

Over the next couple seasons, The Boston Red Stockings dominated the league and hoarded many of the game's best players, even those who were under contract with other teams.

The " Red Sox " name was chosen by the team owner, John I. Taylor, around, following previous Boston teams that had been known as the " Red Stockings ".

The nickname was first used for a baseball team by the Cincinnati Red Stockings, who were members of the pioneering National Association of Base Ball Players.

When the club folded after the 1870 season, Wright was hired by Boston businessman, Ivers Whitney Adams to organize a new team in Boston, and he did, bringing three teammates and the " Red Stockings " nickname along ( Most nicknames were then only nicknames, neither club names nor registered trademarks, so the migration was informal ).

The Boston Red Stockings won four championships in the five seasons of the new National Association, the first professional league.

When a new Cincinnati club was formed as a charter member of the National League in 1876, the " Red Stockings " nickname was commonly reserved for them once again, and the Boston team was referred to as the " Red Caps ".

The National League club in Boston, though seldom called the " Red Stockings " anymore, still wore red trim.

During the 1869 season, Cleveland was among several cities which established professional baseball teams following the success of the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first fully professional team.

For professional baseball's founding year, Major League Baseball ( professional baseball's current official organization ) uses 1869 — the year the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, was established — and held official celebrations for professional baseball's 100th anniversary in 1969 and its 125th anniversary in 1994, both of which were commemorated with league-wide shoulder patches.

What is known is that the crew of the ship Red Dragon, anchored off Sierra Leone, performed Hamlet in September 1607 ; that the play toured in Germany within five years of Shakespeare's death ; and that it was performed before James I in 1619 and Charles I in 1637.
