Oilman Clint Murchison Jr had been trying to get an NFL expansion team in Dallas ( also Lamar Hunt – who ended up with an AFL franchise ), but George Preston Marshall owner of the Washington Redskins had a monopoly in the south.

The Washington Redskins, after wearing white exclusively in the ' 80s and ' 90s, including the 1982 NFC Championship Game ( having gone 3 – 0 in them during the regular season, during CBS ' pregame show, Jimmy " The Greek " Snyder actually invoked the blue jerseys in picking Dallas to win the game ), have since 2002 occasionally reverted to using their burgundy jerseys for second-half home games, but will still wear white against the Cowboys.

Dallas leads the regular season all-time series 61 – 40 – 2, and the Redskins lead the all-time playoff series 2 – 0.

Some notable moments in the rivalry include Washington's victory over Dallas in the 1982 NFC Championship and the latter's 1989 win over the Redskins for their only victory that season.

With the merger of the NFL and AFL in 1970, the Eagles were placed in the NFC East Division with their archrivals the New York Giants, the Washington Redskins, and the Dallas Cowboys.

The Redskins were making their first Super Bowl appearance after posting an 11-3 regular season record and playoff victories over the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys.

The Vikings were making their second Super Bowl appearance after also finishing the regular season with a 12-2 record, and posting postseason victories over the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys.

The Redskins became the second defending champion to lose a Super Bowl ( their divisional rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, were the first, losing Super Bowl XIII after winning Super Bowl XII ).

Only four teams have appeared in more Super Bowls than the Redskins: the Pittsburgh Steelers ( 8 ), Dallas Cowboys ( 8 ), New England Patriots ( 7 ), and Denver Broncos ( 6 ).

Only five teams have more Super Bowl wins than the Redskins: the Pittsburgh Steelers ( 6 ), Dallas Cowboys ( 5 ), San Francisco 49ers ( 5 ), Green Bay Packers ( 4 ), and New York Giants ( 4 ).

According to Forbes Magazine, the Redskins are the second most valuable franchise in the NFL, behind the Dallas Cowboys, and were valued at approximately $ 1. 55 billion as of 2009.

The Redskins reached the NFC Championship Game, defeating Dallas 26 – 3, only to lose to the undefeated Miami Dolphins 14 – 7 in Super Bowl VII.

On January 15, 1983, during the second round of the playoffs against the Minnesota Vikings, John Riggins rushed for a Redskins playoff record 185 yards, leading Washington to a 21 – 7 win and a place in the NFC Championship Game against Dallas, whom they beat 31 to 17.

On December 22, 1996, the Redskins played their final game at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, a victory over the Dallas Cowboys 37 – 10, and finished their tenure at the stadium with a 173 – 102 – 3 record, including 11 – 1 in the playoffs.

Dallas running back Duane Thomas signed with the Hawaiians in 1975 after being released by the Washington Redskins.

Later, in the Dallas Cowboys-Washington Redskins match-up, Hayes caught nine passes for 246 yards ( a franchise record until Miles Austin broke it with a 250 yard-performance on October 11, 2009 against the Kansas City Chiefs ).

Although Dallas is located in the south-central United States, the Cowboys are a member of the NFC East division due to their long-standing rivalries with the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins, all of whom are located on the Eastern seaboard.

On October 16, 2011, the Cowboys wore their road blue jerseys against the New England Patriots for the first time since December 27, 2009, against the Redskins ; the Patriots defeated the Cowboys 20 – 16.

The Cowboys currently have an 8 – 6 advantage over the Redskins at Fedex Field.

The Cowboys waited until Smith had retired as a player before inducting Aikman and Irvin, so all three could be inducted together, which occurred during halftime at a Monday Night Football home game against the arch-rival Washington Redskins on September 19, 2005.

Soon after, the Giants would lose to the Washington Redskins again, but they would bounce back from this defeat by beating their cross-town rival New York Jets, also knocking the Philadelphia Eagles out of playoff contention, leaving them with a tiebreaker versus the Cowboys.

Meanwhile, the Redskins advanced to the Super Bowl without allowing a touchdown in either their 16-3 playoff win over the Green Bay Packers or their 26-3 NFC Championship Game victory over the Cowboys.

The Cowboys, who traditionally wear their white jerseys in home games and often only wear their blue jerseys against teams that have similar policies for themselves ( most notably against the Washington Redskins and occasionally the Philadelphia Eagles ), were forced to wear their blue jerseys as the " home " team in Super Bowl V, which the team lost to the Baltimore Colts and is widely believed where the " blue jersey jinx " started with America's Team.

The Dolphins and Redskins met twice ( VII and XVII ), as did the Steelers and Cowboys ( X and XIII ) and 49ers and Bengals ( XVI and XXIII ).

A bittersweet moment during the season occurred on December 29, 2002, when Darrell Green concluded his 20th and final season as the Redskins defeated the Cowboys 20 – 14 at FedExField.

Past events have included trains for Western Maryland residents to attend sporting events in the Baltimore / Washington Area, such as Baltimore Orioles or Washington Redskins games, or for Baltimore / Washington residents to attend Railfest in Cumberland and enjoy the scenic mountains and fall foliage of Western Maryland.

Still, many favored the Redskins to win the game because of their group of " Over the Hill Gang " veterans, and because Miami had what some considered an easy schedule ( only two Dolphin opponents, Kansas City and the New York Giants posted winning records, and both of those teams were 8-6 ) and had struggled in the playoffs.

In what became an early rivalry in the NFL, the Redskins and Bears met two more times in the NFL Championship.

* December 8 – The Chicago Bears, in what will become the most one-sided victory in National Football League history, defeat the Washington Redskins 73 – 0 in the 1940 NFL Championship Game.

* December 17, 1977 – the Redskins defeat the Los Angeles Rams 17 – 14 in what would be head coach George Allen's final game with the team.

* December 13, 1992 – Redskins ' head coach Joe Gibbs coaches what would be his last win at RFK Stadium.

After the game, Baugh was asked what would have happened if the Redskins ' first scoring drive had resulted in a touchdown.

The Jaguars shredded the Dolphins with 520 total offensive yards in what became Miami quarterback Dan Marino's last game in the NFL and the most lopsided postseason contest since the Chicago Bears defeated the Redskins 73-0 in the 1940 NFL Championship Game.

After the Redskins lost to the Dallas Cowboys in overtime in Week 11, Hall said to the press, " The way I'm playing right now, they need to cut me, because I'm definitely not worth what I'm getting.
