The nobility and the majority of the Riksdag of the Estates supported John, however, in his endeavours to unify the realm, and Charles had consequently ( 1587 ) to resign his pretensions to autonomy within his duchy ; but, steadfast Calvinist as he was, on the religious question he was immovable.

His legitimacy remained under dispute, however, and only in 1927 did he become the head of the Riksdag faction, before confirmed undisputedly as Branting's successor in a 1928 congress.

The Riksdag, however, found the amalgamation process too slow, and decided to speed it up by ending the voluntary aspect.

It was he who persuaded the king to summon the Riksdag of 1786, which, however, he failed to control, and in all Gustav's plans for forcing on a war with Russia Toll was initiated from the first.

With time, however, it became increasingly difficult for a government to stay in office against the will of the Riksdag.

Alf Svensson, however, managed to get into the Riksdag through the KDS party ticket in Jönköping.

During the parliamentary recess, however, the executive remained in the hands of the Privy Council, which was responsible to the Riksdag alone.

In the first Riksdag, however, the so-called " compromise ", which afterwards played such an important part in Swedish political life, came into existence.

During the Riksdag of the same year, however, the premier, Themptander, emphatically declared himself against the protectionist party, and while the parties in the Second Chamber were equal in number, the proposed tax on barley was rejected in the First Chamber.

The Riksdag, however did not accept the new plan in its full extent.

The government bill having, however, been passed by the Second Chamber, the Prime Minister proposed to the king that the Riksdag should be dissolved and new elections for the Second Chamber take place in order to hear the opinion of the country, but as the king did not approve of this Mr Staaff and his government resigned.

The Riksdag, however, delayed coming to a decision, and contented itself by earmarking money for an insurance fund.

The establishment of the Home Guard was passed into law by the Riksdag on May 29, 1940, after the beginning of World War II, however, units had already been formed by the military before this.

He was, however, made governor ( landshövding ) of Kronoberg County, and shortly afterward was elected to represent it in the Riksdag.

The two socialist parties in the Riksdag did not however win a majority in the general elections of 1952 and 1956.

On 13 March 1809, those who had dethroned Gustav IV Adolf appointed him regent, and he was finally elected king by the Riksdag of the Estates.

Here, the king finally pushed through the reduction ordeal, something that had been discussed in the Riksdag since 1650.

As of the general election in 1921, universal and equal franchise was introduced for men and women alike, and the Riksdag finally achieved a system of democratic representation for all citizens who were at least 23 years old on election day.

The Riksdag of 1738 was to mark a turning-point in Swedish history, the Hats carried everything before them, and the aged Horn was finally compelled to retire from a scene where, for thirty-three years, he had played a leading part.

She was recognized as successor by the Riksdag after she had agreed to renounce the powers of absolute monarchy established by her father Charles XI.

Effective from 1970 a reform of the Riksdag had been agreed upon.

In the 2002 Swedish general elections the Kiruna and NHP parties agreed to attempt parliamentary representation in the Swedish Riksdag by running as a joint alternative, trying to reach the county's 4 % threshold for representation in the national parliament.

In 2000 a Riksdag committee rejected, as " unnecessary ", a proposal to give the song legally official status.

He persuaded his ministers to constitute a special inquiry into the proposed abolition of land taxes, and in the address with which he opened the Riksdag of 1875 laid particular stress upon the necessity of giving attention to the settlement of these two burning questions, and in 1880 again came forward with a new proposal for increasing the number of years of service with the militia.

The government eventually laid a proposal for the extension of the franchise before the Riksdag of 1902, the chief feature of which was that the elector should be twenty-five years of age, and that married men over forty years should be entitled to two votes.

The remaining constitutional functions of the Monarch are to open the annual session of the Riksdag, to chair the foreign advisory committee, to preside at the special cabinet council when a new Prime Minister takes office, and to be kept informed by the Prime Minister on matters of state.

It consists of the Prime Minister, appointed by the Riksdag, and cabinet ministers appointed by the Prime Minister.

* Elections: A prime ministerial candidate is first nominated by the Speaker of the Riksdag and is confirmed as Prime Minister following a vote in the Riksdag.

On 2 November Bernadotte made his solemn entry into Stockholm, and on 5 November he received the homage of the Riksdag of the Estates, and he was adopted by King Charles XIII under the name of " Charles John " ( Karl Johan ).

The war-weary Riksdag asserted new powers and reduced the crown to a constitutional monarch, with power held by a civilian government controlled by the Riksdag.

In 1810 French Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's top generals, was elected Crown Prince Charles by the Riksdag.

After he had been deposed in 1599 from the Swedish throne by his uncle, Charles IX of Sweden, and a meeting of the Riksens ständer ( Swedish Riksdag ), he spent much of the rest of his life attempting to reclaim it.

The monarch still ruled under the law and could only legislate in agreement with the Riksdag of the Estates ; rather, the absolutism introduced was the monarch's ability to run the government unfettered by the privy council, contrary to earlier practice.

The absolute rule of Charles XI was instituted by the crown and the Riksdag in order to carry out the Great Reduction which would have been made impossible by the privy council, constituted of high nobility.

On 13 April 2007, Persson also announced his resignation from the Riksdag ( where he had served 1979 – 1985 and from 1991 ) to be succeeded by Caroline Helmersson Olsson from his native Vingåker.

With Sigismund defeated and sent packing, and as both an alien and a heretic to the majority of the Swedish nation, and his formal deposition by the Riksdag of the Estates in 1599 was, in effect, a natural vindication and ex post facto legitimization of Charles's position all along, for the same session of the Riksens ständer named him as the ruler as regent.
