" ( originally written for Max Bacon and the aborted Rain project, later appearing on Bacon's album From the Banks of the River Irwell ) attracted some radio attention.

The town sits within a rural setting in the Forest of Rossendale, amongst the steep-sided upper-Irwell Valley, through which the River Irwell passes.

It was accessed via a junction with the River Irwell in Salford.

In 1987 a society was formed with the aim of restoring the canal for leisure use and, in 2006, restoration began in the area around the junction with the River Irwell in Salford.

This most impressive feature of the canal carried the canal at an elevation of 13 metres ( 39 ft ) over the River Irwell at Barton.

Salford is sited in a meander of the River Irwell, which forms its boundary with the city of Manchester to the east.

After the Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers, the principal tributary of the Alabama is the Cahaba River, which is about long and joins the Alabama River about below Selma.

The navigation of the Tallapoosa River –- which has its source in Paulding County, Georgia, and is about long -– is prevented by shoals and a fall at Tallassee, a few miles north of its junction with the Coosa.
