* March 6 – An SR-71 sets a U. S. transcontinental speed record of 1 hour 8 minutes 17 seconds, on what is publicized as its last official flight.

Skunk Works is responsible for a number of famous aircraft designs, including the U-2, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-117 Nighthawk, and the F-22 Raptor.

The first, the Lockheed U-2, is still in service ; its successor, the newer, much faster SR-71 Blackbird, was retired in 1998.

However most PDE research is military in nature, as the engine could be used to develop a new generation of high-speed, long-range reconnaissance aircraft that would fly high enough to be out of range of any current anti-aircraft defenses, while offering range considerably greater than the SR-71, which required a massive tanker support fleet to use in operation.

The experiment, mounted on the back of an SR-71 Blackbird aircraft, operated like a kind of " flying wind tunnel.

Lackland AFB hosts a collection of vintage military aircraft on static display on its parade grounds, including a B-52 Stratofortress, F-4 Phantom II, SR-71 Blackbird, C-121 Constellation, B-17 Flying Fortress and a B-25 Mitchell.

Blackbird Airpark Museum and the adjacent Palmdale Plant 42 Heritage Airpark ( Now " Joe Davies Heritage Airpark ") have recently been opened on Plant 42 property along Avenue P ( both are free to the public ) with displays of the SR-71, U-2, Century Series fighters and other aircraft designed, engineered, manufactured, and flight tested at its facilities.

Before the Blackbird was to be announced by President Johnson on 29 February 1964, LeMay lobbied to modify Johnson's speech to read SR-71 instead of RS-71.

These were also used as starter motors for the SR-71 Blackbird, mounted on a trolley.
