The deportation of the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto began on 22 July 1942, which was the 9th of Av, Tisha B ' Av, according to the Jewish calendar: " According to the SS Brigadeführer Jürgen Stroop report, a total of approximately 310, 000 Jews were transported in freight trains from the Warsaw Ghetto to Treblinka during the period from 22 July to 3 October 1942.

The Allied troops encountered stiff resistance from the German 9th and 10th SS Panzer divisions, which had been stationed in and around the city.

Five hours after the initial landing, feeling that the British were tied down in Arnhem, the Reconnaissance Battalion of the 9th SS Panzer Division was able to cross the Arnhem bridge and drive to Nijmegen and the bridge over the Waal branch of the Rhine.

The British forces landed some distance from their objectives and were quickly hampered by unexpected resistance – especially from elements of the 9th SS and 10th SS Panzer Divisions.

Additionally, Obergruppenführer Wilhelm Bittrich's II SS Panzer Corps — comprising the remains of Walter Harzer ’ s 9th SS and Heinz Harmel ’ s 10th SS Panzer Divisions — had moved into the area north of Arnhem to refit and reorganise.

The 9th SS had a Panzergrenadier brigade, a reconnaissance battalion, an artillery battalion, two batteries of self-propelled guns and a company of tanks.

Some sources suggest that the 9th had up to 6, 000 men, others suggest that the combined total of the 9th and 10th SS was only 6, 000 – 7, 000 men.

At Arnhem, the Dutch SS Wach Battalion 3 was attached to Kampfgruppe Von Tettau and the 3rd Battalion, 34th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Landstorm Nederland training at nearby Hoogeveen was quickly attached to Harzer ’ s 9th SS Panzer Division when they arrived at the battle on 20 September.

The 10th SS Division was sent south to respond to the American landings at Nijmegen and defend the " island " ( the polder between the Lower Rhine and Waal rivers ), while the 9th would defend Arnhem.

The Totenkopf ( death's head ) symbol, used by German military units for hundreds of years, had been chosen for the SS by Schreck.

Before 1929, the SS wore the same brown uniform as the SA, with the exception of a black tie and a black cap with a Totenkopf (" death's head ") skull and bones symbol on it.

In 1939, from the existing Totenkopfverbände was formed the SS Division Totenkopf composed of members of the Concentration Camp service together with support units transferred from the Army.

The most famous are the 1st SS Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler ( LSSAH ), 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich, 3rd SS Division Totenkopf, 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking and the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend.

In 1941 Hartjenstein served for a year with the 3rd SS Division Totenkopf, a Waffen SS combat division.

This unit grew into the Schutzstaffel ( SS ), which continued to use the Totenkopf as insignia throughout its history.

Her captors were most likely from the 1st Battalion of 3rd SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment Deutschland ( Das Reich Division ).

One of the division's units was the 4th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment (" Der Führer ").
